  Notes	from "The La Crosse Tribune", 12 May 1914 (newspaperarchive.com) PAIR HERE SINCE '57 CELEBRATE SIXTIETH YEAR OF MARRIAGE Mr. and Mrs. Melchior Volz, 124 North Eighth street, are today celebrating the sixtieth anniversary of their marriage. Five children, twenty-one grandchildren and one great-grandchild are present at the celebration. Mr. Volz was born January 6, 1831, near Axhern, Baden-on-the-Rhine, Germany. He came to America in the spring of 1851, landing at New York after a month's trip on the ocean. He worked for a while in Louisville, Ky., before going to Ripley county, Indiana, where he met Miss Josephine Renner, who became his wife May 9, 1854. Mrs. Volz was born Jun 24, 1833, on the old homestead of her parents in Ripley county, Indiana, which was acquired by the parents early in the century, Mr. and Mrs. Renner moving to moving to Indiana from Pittsburg, sailing down the Ohio river to Cincinnati. Mr. and Mrs. Volz were married in the old St. Nicholas church in Ripley county, moving to Chicago soon after their marriage. Later, they moved to Iowa, and in the trip up the Mississippi in 1857, bound for St. Paul, Mr. Volz was so delighted by the location and the beauty of La Crosse that he landed here instead of continuing to St. Paul. That was May 7, 1857. Since that time La Cross has been their house. Twelve children have been born to Mr. and Mrs. Volz, six of them dying in infancy, and one, William, dying twelve years ago at the age of twenty years. The eldest, Rev. Joseph F. Volz of Marshfield, was born on the homestead in Indiana, the rest being natives of La Crosse. The children are: George S and B. H. Volz of La Crosse, Mrs. Mary Guter of Minneapolis. John of Great Fall, Mont., and the Rev Joseph F Volz, pastor of St. John's Catholic church in Marshfield. Since 1875 Mr. and Mrs. Volz have lived on the property at 124 North Eighth street, which they bought from J. J. Hogan. Prior to that time they lived on State street, between Ninth and Tenth streets.

  From "La Crosse Tribune and Leader-Press", 16 Aug 1934 (newspaperarchive.com) BERNARD H VOLZ PASSES SUDDENLY Succumbs at Milwaukee Home: Funeral Services to Be Held Here Saturday Bernard H. Volz, 72, prominent in the insurance and real estate business here for 24 years, passed away suddenly at his home, 1810 West Wisconsin avenue, Milwaukee, at 5 o'clock Wednesday afternoon. He was in apparent good health, although when he retired form business three years ago and moved from La Crosse to Milwaukee he was sickly. He passed away Wednesday afternoon while reading the evening paper. Mr. Volz was born in La Crosse on October 8, 1862. In 1906 Mr. Volz entered the real estate and insurance business, continuing until he was forced to retire in 1931 because of his health. He and his family moved to Milwaukee in that year, the lake shore city since being the family's place of residence. While in La Crosse Mr. Volz was active in the Knights of Columbus, Catholic Order of Foresters, and St. Joseph's society. He is survived by his wife; four daughters, Cecelia, Marcella and Rose Mary, all of Milwaukee, and Marie of Gary, Ind.; two sons, Bernard J, and Charles A. of La Crosse; and three grandchildren, Robert, Richard and Mary Jean Volz of La Crosse. The body will be brought to La Crosse for interment. Funeral services will be held Saturday morning at 8:30 at the home of his son, Bernard J Volz, 132 South Twenty-third street, and 9 o'clock at St. Joseph's cathedral. The Rt. Rev. Msgr. Peter Pape will officiate , and interment will be made in the Catholic cemetery. The rosary will be said at the B.J. Volz residence Friday evening at 7:30. from "Mader Clothing" (maderweb.com) HISTORY OF VOLZ & REUTER, later MADER CLOTHING The Mader Clothing Co. was first established in 1893 by the clothing merchants Volz and Reuter at 125-127 South Fourth St.. They operated the store eleven years before Frank Jr. bought Volz's share and the firm became Reuter and Mader. "...It is the busy store of the town. All that is new and substantial in the line of clothing is kept in full stock, nothing is carried over from old seasons. Their goods sells on merit and their success is due to sound business principles and fair dealing. They are experienced and efficient salesmen and good judge of the goods at hand. A choice line of shoes from the standard factories are carried and a substantial patronage is theirs. They are also agents for the New Home Sewing Machine. Their store is an attraction in all its departments and clerks pleasant and quick. They are rated high in business circles." (1) Reuter and Frank Mader Jr. were partners for 10 years when Reuter was bought out by Frank Mader Sr. "to set his sons up" and the store became the Mader Clothing Co., Frank Jr. having 1/2 interest and Joseph and Henry 1/4 interests each. Frank Jr., the principal owner and manager, was in charge of clothes, Joseph was in charge of the shoe department, and Henry was bookkeeper. At one time the clothing store was a thriving and prosperous store. During World War I, it was going quite well. The store was primarily a men's store. At first, they carried only men's shoes and when they expanded into ladies' shoes, the style changed and they were stuck with a whole bunch of women's shoes. The venture that started so promising led to disagreements between the brothers. Although they were in business together, their families didn't socialize on holidays. Frank Jr. purchased Joseph's share upon his death and in 1940, also bought the building. The two brothers remained in business until 1951 when The Mader Clothing Co. was sold to Frank Wanner. It then became known as Mader's Store for Men. Wanner eventually sold the men's store to Herchan who still called the store Mader's. Because of bad management and other reasons, Herchan went bankrupt and sold to Dad and Lads, a men's store chain. The building still remained in the Mader family and was sold in 1977 by Frank Jr's. daughter Florence to Dad and Lads.
