  from "The Woodland Daily Democrat", 14 May 1934 (newspapers.com) Major L. Baker, prune and grape grower whose ranch is north of Woodland, Monday announced that he will be a candidate for the position of tax collector at the August primaries. He will oppose R. W. Woods, who now holds the office. Mr. Baker has been a taxpayer in Yolo County for the past 23 years, and was formerly a railroad man before entering the ranching business. He is active in Masonic circles, being a member of the Knights Templar, Shriners and Eastern Star. In announcing his candidacy, Mr. Baker stated that if he is elected, he will endeavor to give the public in efficient and economical administration of the office from "The Scaramento Bee", 28 May 1964 (newspapers.com) YOLO, Yolo Co. - Major L. Baker, a resident of Yolo County since 1912, died today in his home. He had observed his 91st birthday anniversary Tuesday. Funeral plans are pending in the Kraft Brothers Chapel in Woodland, Yolo County. Baker was a native of Michigan. He worked many years for the Southern Pacific Company in farmed east of here. His wife, Bertha, died in 1959. Survivors include a sister-in-law, Lois Baker of Yolo, and a number of nieces and nephews. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge in Perry Mich., and the Knights Templar Commandery in Auburn, Placer County, and the Ben Ali Shrine Temple in Sacramento. from "The Auburn Journal", 4 Jun 1964 (newspapers.com) Major L. Baker, better known to his friends in the Auburn area as “Raisin” Baker, died at his home in Yolo, Yolo County on May 28. the deceased was a resident of the Auburn area for many years before moving to Yolo. He was a member of the Auburn Commandery of Knights Templar iand Delta chapter, Royal Arch Masons of Auburn. He was in compliance with one of his final requests that John H. Robinson, past Master of the Eureka Lodge of Masons of Auburn, went to Woodland on June 1 to conduct Masonic services for the deceased. Services were held from the Kraft Brothers Chapel. The deceased had observed his 91st birthday on May 26th. Since leaving Auburn, Major Baker had returned each year to attend Easter Sunday church services with the sir Knights of Auburn Commandery and he always maintained a close friendship with those he knew here.
