From "The Descendents of Edward Perkins of New Haven, Conn"
ELY, born in Lyme about ; married, 1788 or '89, Sarah, youngest daughter of Nathan and (Prentice) DeWolfe of Horton, Nova Scotia, who was born about 1773. He was a large man and a farmer by occupation. His father settled him on part of his farm, which Ely afterwards sold and he removed to Aylesford, Nova Scotia. Being very easy-going in business matters, he managed to let most of his property slip through his fingers. He died suddenly of apoplexy Jan. 10, 1825, and is buried in the Randal burying ground in Aylesford. His widow married for her second husband Joel Farnsworth, and after his death she lived in Clarence, Annapolis County, N. S., for many years. Her death was on Christmas day, 1865, when she was nearly 93.

In the first two decades of the 19th century the following were the chief houses in and near the present town. On the "Roy farm", between Kentville and New Minas, which was originally the grant of Eli Perkins, stood the Perkins grantee house. Half a mile to the west, on the high road, stood the Benjamin Peck House, afterward enlarged or completely rebuilt, by Capt. Joseph Barss, who married
Olivia, daughter of Judge Elisha DeWolf. A few rods further west still, on a knoll from which a charming view of the dykes could be had, stood the grantee house of Benjamin Peck's younger brother, Cyrus Peck.

MORTON COGSWELL, a pioneer of 1885. is a native of Nova Scotia, born December 9, 1846. He received his education in the schools of that province and later engaged in farming. While there he held, for ten years, a commission under Queen Victoria as peace ofificer. Subsequently he spent a year in Minnesota, then returned to Nova Scotia and remained until 1885, when he came to Spokane county and engaged in farming. The next year he removed to Moran prairie and he lived there for the ensuing three years, then came to Rockford, where he followed the hotel business two years, kept a livery stable for one and then a saloon for two. In 1892 his liquor business was burned out and he moved onto his farm eight miles southeast of Rockford. Mr. Cogswell is an enterprising and industrious man and has a fine farm of rich, productive land, well improved and furnished with a splendid house and barns and other necessary buildings. Indeed, he deserves rank among the most thrifty and successful farmers of the county. He was married, in Nova Scotia, January 15, 1868, to Miss Amelia Corbett. a native of that province, and they have five children: Alice, wife of Fred Sheldon, of Olympia; William, a farmer and blacksmith; H. A letter just received in Sarnia from Mrs. Jacob Perkins at Krosno, Galicia, gives some particulars of the death of her husband, a former well known Petrolia oil man. Mr. Perkins was employed in the Galician oil fields before the war, but after the war broke out was taken with his family to Vienna, where they were held prisoners. In November, 1916, following the last retreat of the Russians from the Galician front. Mr. Perkins was taken back to Galicia under military escort to engage in the work of producing oil for Government use. The family was kept in Vienna. He continued working under great difficulties until March, 1917, when he was taken ill with influenza, dying after seven weeks' illness. Mrs. Perkins reached him two weeks before his death, and remained in the country to help wind up his affairs. Galicia is now under Polish jurisdiction. During the years of the war they could not write even to Mexico or the United states when the latter was neutral, owing the the severe censorship; letters were sent byt apparently they did not get outside of Austria. Travel is still difficult in Central Europe and conditions are awful; the people, according to the writer, are fighting one another like mad dogs. She expects to return to America shortly, with her daughter.

J. ELI PERKINS, though in his very prime at the time of his death, Dec. 26, 1903, was for years one of the leading oil producers of Petrolia, Ont., and a leading cattle dealer of Lambton County.
Mr. Perkins was of English extraction on the paternal side and of Dutch extraction on the maternal side. The family was founded in Canada by William Perkins, his grandfather, who came from the United States and settled in Nova Scotia, where he married Harriet Crealman. They reared a family of five children, the youngest of whom was Alonzo Perkins, of Petrolia, and the eldest James Perkins, father of our subject.
James Perkins was born in Nova Scotia Jan. 25, 1825, and in 1846 came to Elgin County, Ont., where he engaged in farming until 1863. He then removed to Oil Springs, Lambton County, and engaged in the cattle business, and in both lines was most successfully engaged until his death, on Nov. 19, 1895. He owned considerable property in Enniskillen township, his first purchase of land being Lot 20, Concession 11, which is now owned by his son Cyrus F. Mr. Perkins was a member of the Petrolia council for many years and politically he was a Reformer. In fraternal connection he was a Mason. Both he and wife were identified with the Baptist Church, of which Mrs. Perkins was a member. On March 14, 1850, Mr. Perkins married Mary Vansickle, who was born Jan. 11, 1832, daughter of James and Susan (Minor) Vansickle, and still survives. The children of James Perkins and wife were as follows: Susan Mrs. O. Smith; Cyrus Francis, of Galicia, Austria, where he is an oil producer and a mineral valuator for the government; Jacob, an oil operator; J. Eli; and Mary, deceased, who was the wife of Loyd Harris, of the Massey-Harris Co., Brantford, Ontario.
J. Eli Perkins was born Nov. 4, 1863, in Elgin County, and was educated in the public schools of Petrolia. In 1882 he engaged in the oil business, becoming one the leading operators in the locality, and he was scarcely less well known as a feeder and raiser of fine Short Horn cattle. Mr. Perkins was the manager of Berghein & McGarvey of Hanover, Germany, in the oil business, thus gaining a very practical knowledge of the best German methods. He acquired considerable property, owing several fine farms in Enniskillen township, on Lot 20 and Lot 3, Concession 13. Though so constantly pressed with business affairs he took an active interest in the welfare and good government of the place, and for eight years was a member of the council at Petrolia; he once filled the office of reeve. Mr. Perkins was just forty at the time of his death, yet he had accomplished what few men can hope for in a long lifetime. It was not only his success as a business man and leader in public affairs, however, the made him prominent. His high character and remarkable personality gave him unusual standing among his fellow men, and no man in Petrolia occupied a more enviable position in public esteem. He was laid to rest Hilldale cemetery, mourned by all who know him.
In 1888 Mr. Perkins married Miss Sarah Becker, daughter of the late Edward Becker, an early settler and contractor at Petrolia and two sons were born to this union, namely; Edward C. and James Franklin. Politically Mr. Perkins was a Reformer, and fraternally he belonged to the the Masons and the Royal Arcanum.

A wide circle of friends will learn today with regret, of the death of Mrs. Harris, the amiable young wife of Mr. Lloyd Harris, of London, Eng. No particulars are on hand as to the cause of death. A cablegram was received yesterday, conveying The melancholy intelligence, but without details. The body will be brought to Canada and interred here or in Petrolea. The late Mrs. Harris was a daughter of James Perkins, Esq., of Petrolea, and was married to Mr. Harris in October, 1888. Upon the establishment by the Harris company of an agency in London, Eng., Mr. Lloyd Harris went there. He and Mrs. Harris took up their permanent residence in England in April, 1891. Deceased leaves a little daughter besides her bereaved husband, for whom the deepest sympathy of the community is felt.

Many early residents of Plymouth County remember the Varnum family which settled in Fredonia Township away back in the seventies, and were contemporanous with the Reeves family, the Knowltons, the Winslows, Webb Freeman and Case, and others. The Varnums had a family of six boys who were brought up and reared in Fredonia township. Walter Scott Varnum was the eldest of these boys and is now living in California. His friends and college mates are planning to celebrate a diamond jubilee for him in April on the occasion of his seventy-fifth birthday. Walter S. Varnum graduated from Hillsdale College, Michigan, in 1880, with a degree of bachelor of arts and pursued the profession of teaching in various institutions in Kansas, Arizona and California. Following the death of his wife, Alice Case, an early Fredonia township resident, he traveled extensively over the Pacific Coast. Mr. Varnum was admitted to the bar while living in Kansas. He spends his time in the country in southern California with his typewriter, books and magazine, and is largely interested in methods for improving the education of children. The celebration which is planned in his honor will be held in the home of his brother, George Varnum, who is a practicing attorney in Anaheim, California. Another brother, James Varnum, lives at Centerville, S.D. Henry Newell, of this city, is a cousin of the Varnum family. The mother of W.S. Varnum and one his brothers are buried in the LeMars cemetery.

VARNUM, CHARLES W., lawyer, politician, orator, was born Feb. 25, 1862, in Sanilac County, Mich. He attended the Hillsdale college; graduated with highest honors from the Iowa City Commercial college, amd from the law department of the state university of Iowa with the degree of LL.B. He has attained success in the profession of law at Denver, Colo. In 1891 he organized the Republican league of Colorado, and was its first president. He has been three times a delegate to the National League convention, and secured the national convention of 1894 for Denver. In 1894 he was elected chairman of the national silver party committee of Denver.

Charles William Varnum was born February 25, 1862 in Speaker, Sanilac County, Michigan; the forth of six children of Richard Martin and Harriet Ann Perkins Varnum. He married Lulu Lee DeLissenbee daughter of Leonard W. and Mary Stallcup DeLissenbee, on June 1, 1893. They had no children. Charles was a teacher and a lawyer, graduated L.L.B. in 1888 from Iowa State University, and secretary of Republican League in 1894.

WILLIAM H SKINNER

On April 13, 1873, our subject married Miss Elizabeth A. Laird, who died in July, 1886, leaving five children, Ansel O, at Rathdrum, Idaho; Agnes A., now Mrs. C. L. Wright, at New Hampton, Iowa; Charles H, Guy E., and Mary E., all in Lewiston. On February 29, 1888, Mr. Skinner married Miss Georgia A., daughter of George and Catherine Laird, and a cousin of his former wife. Mrs. Skinner was born in Bradford, Iowa, in March, i860, and has two brothers, J. G. Laird and J. J. Laird, and E. G. Laird, Mrs. W. R. Longhorn, and Mrs. E. G. Sage, half sisters. To Mr. and Mrs. Skinner have been born the following named children, Gladys I., deceased, Catherine, Ruth A., Rae G., Grant, Helen, and Georgia, all at home. Mr. Skinner was educated in Nova Scotia at Acadia College and at Bradford Academy, in Iowa.

He came with his parents to Iowa in 1869. He had taught four years before his advent to Iowa and there for two years he was one of the thorough educators. In 1873 he took a homestead in South Dakota, Brookings County, moving there in 1875. He farmed for a few years and in 1878 he opened a real estate and loan office in Brookings. There he continued until 1900, when he sold and came to Lewiston, where he engaged in contracting, paving the main street in Lewiston. He then went into real estate with Hon. Eben Mounce, the firm was known as Skinner & Mounce.

In 1901, Mr. Skinner was elected to the office of mayor of Lewiston, and 1902 reelected without opposition and he is serving in that capacity at the present writing. It speaks highly of his ability and integrity that he was so soon called by the people to this responsible office. While in Brookings he was postmaster fromi89i to 1895, was elected to the office of district clerk and served the County for five years, was secretary of the board of regents of the State Agricultural College and the United States Experiment Station there and was chairman of the board of County commissioners for three years. In all this long public career in important offices it must be said of Mr. Skinner that he has with great faithfulness, and excellent efficiency conserved the interests of all, and in every case the office sought the man and not the man the office. In his position of chief executive of Lewiston he has wrought many beneficial changes and his work is appreciated by a discriminating people.

He is a member of the Masons, blue lodge, Royal Ar.ch Chapter, and Knights Templar, also of the A. O. U. W., the M. W. A., and the K. of P. He and his family are allied with the Baptist Church and are staunch supporters of the faith. Mr. Skinner is one of the able men of our County, and has wrought with marked wisdom and executive force for its interests; is held in high esteem by all, being a man of enterprise and progressive ideas and dominated by keen perception and practical judgment and sound principles in all of his ways. In addition to his other arduous and many labors, he has found time to study law and is admitted to the state courts.

An 80 year old Omaha man died in a hospital Wednesday night of injuries suffered when he was struck by a jeep. The victim was William Illsley of 1546 South Twenty-eighth avenue. He died of head injuries suffered, police said, when he was struck by a jeep driven by Dominic Pistillo, 18, of 3051 South Twenty-eighth Avenue. The accident occurred at Twenty-ninth and Woolworth Avenue as Mr. Illsley was pulling an empty coaster wagon across the street.

DEATH CLAIMS DR. C. H. LONG
Injuries Received In Automobile Accident Prove Fatal

Dr. Charles H. Long, 7614 Essex Avenue, Windsor Park, Chicago, formerly of this city, passed away at 9:40 o?clock last evening at the St. Francis hospital from injuries received¬ August 14? when an auto in which he was riding overturned on a curve near Detroit while en route to Escanaba on his annual vacation. Dr. Long was the most seriously injured of the three occupants of the auto suffering concussion of the brain and severe internal injuries. His fight for recovery was hampered by the fact that he had been in failing health the past two years. He was 68 years of age. Mrs. Long suffered a number of fractured ribs and spinal injuries, while John Libretti, 43, Chicago, chauffer, suffered lacerations of the scalp and face. Both are recovering.

Practiced Here

Charles H. Long was born on October 4, 1863, in Fredrickton, New Brunswick. After finishing at the high school in his native town he entered McGill University at Montreal where he studied medicine, graduating in 1888. He opened an office in Chicago the same year and in 1889 moved to Menominee. A year later he came to Escanaba when he built up a splendid practice. He retired from general practicing in 1904 and removed to Chicago where continued his practice to specializing in eye, ear, nose, and throat diseases. After locating in Chicago for the second time he studied for two years in Austria and London, England. While???Chicago to resume his practice. While practicing in that city he was affiliated with the late Prof. Franklin Coleman, noted specialist. Dr. Long held the position of Professor in the eye and ear departments at the Post Graduate Hospital of Chicago and was also Professor in the nose and throat departments at the Illinois Infirmary. He was president of the Chicago Otological society and past secretary of the McGill University Alumni, of which organization he had also held the office of president. He was a member of the Cleveland Lodge, F & A M of Chicago, the Illinois Athletic and the Cook County Medical society.
Funeral Friday. The body was taken to the Allo Funeral Home to be prepared for burial. Funeral services will be Friday afternoon with interment in Lakeview cemetery.
Surviving are his widow, two brothers and two sisters, Dr. Harry W. Long, Gary, Indiana and Dr. Frank T. Long, Chicago, Mrs. George W. Wescott,, Chicago, and Mrs. Louise Long Mammell of Bridgeport, Conn. Dr. Harry Long and Mrs. Wescott have already arrived in this city.

DR. FRANK LONG, GLADSTONE, DIES
Funeral Services Will Be Held Wednesday Afternoon
Dr. Frank T. Long, 71, well-konwn Gladstone dentist, died at his home, 823 Wisconsin avenue, at 3 o'clock Sunday morning after a long illness. He had been ailing since he suffered his first stroke in October, 1946. Dr. Long was born in Fredericton, New Brunswick, Canada, Oct. 20, 1875, and came to Menominee at the age of 12. He attended the Menominee high school , Marinette Business college, and was graduated form the school of dentistry of Northwestern university in 1895. Following his graduation, he located at Gladstone, where he remained a few years. He practiced dentistry in Escanaba 25 years, in Chicago six years, and then resumed his practice at Gladstone, While residing in Escanaba, he was prominent in civic affairs and served as alderman and mayor pro tem. Dr. Long was a member of the Presbyterian church, Blue Lodge, Consistory and Shrine. Besides his widow, Marian, he is survived by three daughters and one son from a previous marriage; Mrs. Clifford Murker, Gladstone; Mrs. Carl F. Johnson, Newberry; Mrs. Jean Wallace, Chicago; and Gordon Long of the U.S. Navy; also seven granddaughters and one great granddaughter. The body will lie in state at the Allo Funeral home in Escanaba beginning at noon today. Funeral services will be held there 2:30 o'clock Wednesday afternoon and burial will be in Lakeview cemetery.

DR. HARRY W. LONG, 65, DIES OF HEART DISEASE
Dr. Harry W. Long, pioneer Escanaba physician and surgeon, who for the past ten years had specialized in the diseases of eyes, ears, nose, and throat, passed away yesterday afternoon at his home 508 South Seventh street, after a brief critical illness. Dr. Long had suffered from an affection of the heart for the past four years and had endured several seizures from that cause but it was only during the past four weeks that his condition became critical. At 12:20 o?clock he passed peacefully away, surrounded by members of his family. Because of his long establishment in the practice of general medicine and surgery in this city and the prominence he gained in more recent years as a specialist, Dr. Long was probably one of the best known members of the medical profession in this section of the peninsula. A host of people who had known him through the years, both as their doctor and their fried will sincerely grieve at the passing of one who had been a part of the community life of this city for nearly a half century.

Funeral Services Friday

The body has been removed to the Anderson funeral home, from which place funeral services will be conducted at 2:30 o?clock on Friday afternoon. Dr. Harry Wadsworth Long was born at Fredrickton, New Brunswick, July 29, 1878. When a boy of 9 years he moved with his parents to Menominee where he attend the public schools until the death of his father, when he came to make his home with his brother, the late Dr. C. H. Long. He was graduated from Escanaba high school with the class of 1895. Before and after school and in vacation periods he worked at the drug store of the late Albert Ellsworth and thus attained a desire to enter the medical profession. He attended the University of Michigan for one year and completed his medical education at Northwestern university, graduating with the class of 1900.

Founded Cottage Hospital

He immediately returned to Escanaba and entered the general practice of medicine and surgery with his brother. In 1905 DR. C. H. Long moved to Chicago, allowing his brother to assume chare of the firm?s extensive practice here. Because of the crowded conditions at the old Delta county hospital, now St. Francis, Dr. Long organized the Cottage hospital and conducted that institution for several years. Desiring to follow the footsteps of his older brother, Dr. Long went to Austria in 1914, to pursue a course in the treatment of diseases of the eye, ear, nose and throat under the eminent specialists in that country. He was in Austria when World War I broke out and saw the funeral of Archduke Francis Ferdinand of Austria, whose assassination formed the basis of that conflict.

Served in War

He experienced great difficulty in escaping from Europe, but finally returned here and was preparing to engage in practice as a specialist when America entered the war. He volunteered for service and was commissioned as a captain in the Army Medical Corps. He took his military training at Camp Oglethorpe, Chattanooga, Tenn., and was pursuing a special course at Harvard university, Boston, when a devastating flue epidemic swept the military forces and the nation. He was sent to Camp Devers, Mass., and served rotation at Camp Upton, Camp Greene, and Camp Grant, finally receiving his discharge from military service at Camp Custer, June 30, 1919. In order to refit himself for the division of medicine and surgery in which he desired to specialize he took a post-graduate course at Rush Medical college and opened his office at Gary, Ind., in the late fall of 1919. He returned to Escanaba in 1934 and had since been engaged in the practice of his profession, in the city where first hung out his shingle in 1900.

In addition to his wife and one son, Marshall Long, of Gary, Ind., Dr. Long is survived by two grandsons, David and Leslie Long of Gary, together with one brother Dr. Frank T. Long of Gladstone, and one sister, Mrs. Louise Hamill, of Gary.

Dr. Long was a charter member of the Gary Lodge, A. F. & A.M. and a member of the Shrine and the Consistory at Marquette. He was also a member of Escanaba lodge of Elks and past president of the Delta County Medical society.

ARTHUR C. COGSWELL. The natural ability and real worth of the gentleman whose name is at the head of this article, brought to the front by a determined will and fitted for the prosecution of a large business by a careful and thorough training, have fitted him to hold the leading position in Burke, where he is operating at this time. He is postmaster of that town and manager of the Tiger Mercantile Company's establishment in connection. He is one of the rising men of the district and is popular and highly respected.

Arthur C. Cogswell was born in Halifax, Nova Scotia, on April 11, 1868, the son of William H. and Mary (Woodill) Cogswell, natives of Nova Scotia. The family is an old English and prominent line and some of them were the Pilgrims in the Mayflower while others came and founded Halifax. Our subject descended from the Halifax line. The father died in Rockford, Washington, in 1897. The mother came from an old English family and died in Rockford in 1894. Our subject was reared and educated in Halifax and graduated from the high school there when thirteen, having also carried the business college course in the evenings. When he was seventeen, the family came to Oregon and four years later removed to Rockford, Washington, where our subject was partner with his father in general merchandising. In 1895 Mr. Cogswell came to Murray and took charge of the late M. Prager's business and continued with the company for one year. After the death of that gentleman our subject came to Burke and took charge of the Tiger Mercantile establishment and has demonstrated his ability and efficiency here. He has one brother, Byron F., and one sister, Mrs. Rose, whose husband is manager of a steamboat company and a prominent merchant in Dawson, where they dwell. It is of note that the well known philanthropist, Cogswell, now deceased, of San Francisco, is a second cousin of our subject's father.

In April, 1897, at Rockford, Washington, Mr. Cogswell married Miss Anna, daughter of Alfred M. and Regina Rud, natives of Norway, now residing in Rockford. Mrs. Cogswell was born in Elgin, Illinois. Mr. Cogswell is a member of the K. P., being past C. C., of the Elks and in political matters is a Republican and active. He has been delegate to the state convention and was secretary of the fifth senatorial district in Washington several years. He is now a member of the county central committee.

Robie Lewis, b. November 3, 1866, studied at Pictou Academy, and in 1882 matriculated at Dalhousie College, winning there a Munro bursary of $150 a year for two years. On account of illness he left college in his second year. In 1887-8 he studied law at Dalhousie, and in 1888-9, at the University of Michigan, where he took the degree of LL.B. He then practiced in the state of Washington until 1892, when he removed to British Columbia, to the bar of which province he was admitted in 1893. From 1893 to 1905 he practised at New Westminster, where he was alderman in 1899-1900, and in the latter year unsuccessful candidate for the Local House, his opponent being the Hon. J.C. Brown, Minister of Finance. In 1899 he was appointed Debenture Commissioner for the city, which office he still holds. He 1906 he went to Vancouver, where the next he formed a partnership with Hon. W.J. Bowser, Attorney General of B.C., and D.S. Wallbridge, In 1907 he was appointed a K.C. Oter members of the Reid family fill useful positions in various parts of Canada
