BAKER, PETER, Littleton. Return of men enlisted into Continental Army from Capt. Aaron Jewett's (3d) co., Col. Jonathan Reed's (6th Middlesex Co.) regt,. dated FEb. 19, 1778; joined Capt. Samuel Darby's (2d) co., Col. John Bailey's regt.; enlistment, 3 years or during war; also, Private, Col. Peter Baker was not a typical 1800 century individual. He served in the Revolutionary War, possibly wintering in Valley Forge (very noble). However, he apparently bailed on Lydia and the children in 1800 (not so noble). Lydia remarried four years later. One account refers to her as being a widow. Peter, however, reappears in 1818 in the town of his daughter Sarah where he died a poor man (serves him right). Peter and Lydia's children were apparently raised by a variety of others and scattered across New England and the frontier of New York. They and their children become quite successful.
From Pension File Peter states he was part of:
    1. Taking of Burgoyne (17th October 1777)
    2. Wintering in Valley Forge (19 Dec 1777 to 19 Jun 1778)
    3. Battle of Monmouth (June 28, 1778)

Peter married Lydia Dudley on 14 Nov 1783 in Littleton, Middlesex, MA. Lydia (daughter of Stephen Dudley and Lydia Harwood) was born on 11 Aug 1762 in New Ipswich, Hillsborough, NH; died on 9 Sep 1815. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

When at about this time one Asa Baker fell into the river and was drowned, his body was quickly recovered and O. B. Herrick, who was at that time Coroner of the County, immediately empaneled a jury that rendered the following verdict: "Asa Baker, on the 20th day of April, 1851, at about eight o'clock in the evening, casually fell into the Seneca River and then and there casually, accidentally, and by misfortune, was drowned."

DEAR SIR:-I have your favor of the ll th inst, in whioh you say, "We are going to erect a monument on the village square, and we are going to put on the names of the soldiers who were in the wars as described in the circular." There was no circular accompanying and therefore I am not informed as to which wars were included in the inquiry; but presume that the main wars with foreign countries, and especially with England, were intended. My father, Asa Baker, served during the war of 1812, three years, and at the close was. a captain. I have among my papers his commission as 1st lieutenant in Capt. Morrell's company of 31st Regiment U. 8. infantry. He used to tell me that he was in the battle of Plattsburgh, and in several hotter places than that in Canada, where his company was engaged several times in shirmishing, that resulted in hand to hand fights.
If the men of 1812 are to be remembered on your monument, I will contribute a small sum towards its erection. It is fifty years the 8d day of this July since I left Baldwinsville to hunt my fortune. I suppose but few remain there now that I knew or ever knew me. To all who do, however, remember those days, I have a warm corner in my heart, and for the home
    of my birth and boyhood.
    Very Sincerely,
    William R Baker

from "History of Westmoreland, Cheshire County, New Hampshire"
LARKIN BARKER was born in this town September 17, 1795, and remained until his decease, February 2, 1872. For many years his counsel was sought from far and near upon all legal matters. Possessed of a tenacious memory, an aptness for scholarship, he soon took a prominent place in both town and county. He held the commission of justice of the peace during nearly the whole of his business career, and transacted nearly all the business of the town in this line. He was assistant judge of the Court of Common Pleas seven years, judge of Probate for Cheshire County twenty-two years, resigning in 1864 by reason of poor health, and held, at different times, all the offices within the gift of his native town.

from "The New Hampshire Sentinel", 5 Feb 1872 (genealogybank.com)
In Westmoreland, Feb. 3, after a brief illness, Hon. Larkin Baker, aged 76 years 4 mos. and 16 days. Judge Baker was born in Westmoreland Sept. 17, 1795, where he has always resided. In early life he was left without the care and counsel of a father. He acquired his education in the primary schools and in the academy at Chesterfield. He afterward taught school several years. He held for a few years a Captain's and Major's commission. In 1822 he was married to Celina Cobb, daughter of Gen. Simeon Cobb of Westmoreland. There were born to them nine children, four sons and five daughters. He devoted several years to agricultural and a few years to mercantile pursuits, assisting Gen. Cobb in the transaction of his business in its various branches. His wife with whom he had lived thirty years, died Oct. 4, 1852, age 50 years. He married his second wife, widow Sarah Wier, March 2, 1855. He faithfully served the town for many years in the capapcity of Justice of the Peace, Town Clerk and Selectman; he also represent the town two years in the General Court. He held the commission of Judge of the Court of Common Pleas nine years for Cheshire County and Judge of Probate over twenty-two years, which latter office he resigned by reason of ill health at the age of 69 years, after which he was admitted to the Bar under the Statute. He was ever ready to impart information to all who sought his counsel. In him the widow and the fatherless ever found a true and faithful friend, a wise and fatherly counsellor whose memory will be gratefully cherished by the people of the town and county whose interest he so long and so faithfully served. He was - to use the language of a near neighbor - "perfectly honest" - than which, there can be no higher social virtue; and of whom it may be justly said, "Good and faithful servant." All that love and affectin cound do was done for him by his dear wife and dutifull children and his kind and attentive neighbors. A wife, two sons and one daughter survive to mourn their irreparable loss. For nearly fifty years he ws ,until recently, an active and influential member of the Congregational church whose interests we was ever zealous to promote. May people from this and other towns were present at the funeral services to testify their respect for him whos memory they gratefully cherish and to sympathize with bereaved friedns. An appreciative audience listened with respectful attention to a discourse by the writer from Gen. 5:24.

Hon. W. R. Baker, son of Asa Baker, and in early life a resident of this village, died suddenly at his home in Houston, Texas, April 80th, of paralysis, in the 70th year of his age. Deceased was a cousin of E. M. Robinson, of this village. He was a man of unusual business capacity and had won a place in the hearts of his fellow citizens that caused universal mourning at his sudden death. Of a kindly and generous disposition, his was always a helping hand in times of need. When the committee here was seeking contributions for the erection of the soldiers' monument, Mr. Baker sent them $50 as a reminder that he still felt an interest in his boyhood's home. He is kindly remembered by many of our people, who sincerely mourn his departure. Editorially the Honston Post has these kind words for him: "Houston lost one of its best men and citizens yesterday when the generous spirit of William Robinson Baker took its flight from earth. Mr. Baker in many respects was a remarkable man. He had neared the allotted three-score-and-ten, and yet op to the very moment that be was stricken, on Tuesday night, was regarded as a perfect specimen of physical development and preservation. He was on the streets Tuesday afternoon, apparently in his usual good health, and those who saw him had no kind of intimation of the approaching, end. Mr. Baker's life has been an unusually busy one. Beginning life a poor young man, by indomitable energy, perseverance and business tact he accumulated a handsome fortune. He was among tne pioneers of Texas, and some of the grand enterprises of the State are indebted in part to his fine judgment-and business energy for their success. The growth and progress of Houston have been materially aided by his enterprise and liberality, and the Post can think of no other man to whom the city is more indebted in this respect. During several years past he lost a great deal of money in bad speculations, but, when payingdebts that he was not morally at least responsible for, never complained. In this respect he was a philosopher, and took the world about as he found it, Mr. Baker was a man of generous disposition; he rarely if ever treasured up a personal in jury. He was liberal hearted in the extreme; his gifts in charity, though done quietly and without ostentation, amounted to thousands during the course of a year and many poor people in Houston will miss and sincerely mourn him. As a friend he was true as steel, devoted, always faithful; he was not, strictly speaking, a church man - that is, he was not connected with any religious denomination - his religion appearing to be friendship and charity. As an exponent of these two noblest attributes he was a shining example. The city of Houston will sincerely mourn his sad death, while hundreds of friends throughout Texas will join the Post in tendering condolence to to the bereaved relatives."

    DEATH OF WM. R. BAKER
ONE OF THE MOST PROMINENT CITIZENS OF HOUSTON GONE
A Blow that Will Be Severely Felt - He Expires After a Brief Illness- Sketch of R's Long, Useful and Hononable Life.
HOUSTON, Tex., April 30 - This evening at 7:00 o'clock Houston sustained a loss that cannot be repaired in the death of Hon. Wm. Robinson Baker, one of our oldest and most highly esteemed citizens. It was a shock to the entire community, and when generally know will cause perhps more sorrow than the death of any other one man. He seemed in perfect health yesterday afternoon and evening. He was at the game of base-ball, of which sport he was very fond, between Houston and Galveston, and last evening participated in a card party at the home of his sister, Mrs. Clarke, where he was attacked with paralysis a little after 10 o'clock, and was at once conveyed to this home, where Dr. Perl attended him. Mr. Baker himself did not seem to regard his condition as dangerous and was rational at 4 o'clock this morning for short time, after which he seemed to suffer a renewed stroke and never recovered consciousness. Everything that the best medical skill could suggest was done, but of no avail. It was the second or third time he had been attacked by paralysis, and hence a much greater apprehension prevailed than he himself seemed to feel.

THE COURT HOUSE THRONGED WITH WOMEN MONDAY
...There has been some rivalry among the young women over who should have the honor of issuing a certificate to the eldest one on the honor roll. While the young women were busy, the tax collector, A.R. Miller, who is also a busy man, show Mrs. Harriet M. Szabo, mother of the wife of Judge Charles E. Ashe, awaiting her turn. With the enthusiasm of youth the tax collector grasped the opportunity to do an act of courtesy and to get first honors for the honor roll. He called Mrs. Szabo into the main office and registered her himself. Mrs. Harriet M. Szabo is 84 years of age, lives at 1103 Dallas street, has lived in this one place for more than 64 years, and will on July 27 vote at Precinct 9.

BAKER - At his late residence in the town of Cambria, Omar Baker, age 45 years, 10 months and 21 days. Funeral from the last residence, Wednesday, Dec. 21st, at 11 o'clock A.M

from "The Lockport Daily Journal", 15 Jan 1885 (fultonhistory.com)
In Cambria, on Dec. 28th, 1884 occured the death of Mr. Omar Baker. Mr. Baker was born in Cambria, Feb. 8th, 1839, and was consequently in the 46th year of his age. He spent his entire life on the farm where he died. He was highly esteemed and respected by all who knew him, and there was none to speak ill of him. He had held various positions of trust in his native town, and was always found faithful. His affection for his family, all of whom survive him, was peculiarly strong, and he was untiring in his efforts for their welfare. His constitution, never rugged, was undermined by disease of the heart, to which he was compelled at last to succumb. For four months he was confined to his room and a large part of the time his sufferings were intense. When a young man he consecrated himself to God's service, and his manhood was a Christian manhood, so that in the presence of death he could say and did say "I know in whom I have believed," and his end was peace. Blessed are the dead that die in the Lord:. - Rev. 14:13.

Day, Charles B., for many years at the head of the large wholesale and retail dry-goods firm of Day Bros. & Co., of Peoria, Ill., was born in Chesterfield, N.H., in 1821, where he joined the Baptist church in 1850. The next year he removed to Brimfield, Ill., where he found a small Baptist church, to which, to its great joy, he immediately joined himself, though assured that such an alliance would not be favorable to business. In 1860 he removed to Peoria, and became a member of the First church there, and continues one of its main supporters. Though not a man of fluent speech, he has always been regular in his attendance upon church appointments, and has ever been liberal in his contributions. He has also paid considerable sums to Christian education, in which cause his interest is intelligent and constant. He is well known in the State as a successful business man, a firm Baptist, an uncompromising friend of temperance.

As a friend and leader of the young people in the church, as a free and cheerful participant in prayer and social meetings, as an occasional occupant of the pulpit, as a lay preacher, and as an ardent friend of the temperance cause, alike in private and in official positions, Larkin B. Day is held in high appreciation by the citizens of Peoria and throughout the State. He is at present (1880) a member of the city council

Members of a Bankrupt Miwaukee Firm Arrested
MILWAUKEE, Wis., July 26. - [Special] - A few weeks ago the wholesale and retail carpet house of L.B. Day & Co., this city, made a bad failure, as reported in these dispatches at the time. Something of a sensation has been caused today by the fact that late yesterday afternoon John D. Van Nuys and Walter S. Hamilton, members of the firm, were arrested by Deputy United State Marshal Marshall, on a order of arrest issued by Judge Dyer. This morning the same officer arrested Larkin B. Day, the senior member of the firm. The arrests were all made on the affidavits of Andrew Wright, a member of the firm of W.&J. Sloane, of New York, who charges the members of the firm with wrongfully converting property of the plaintiffs to their own use and of obtaining goods under false pretenses. The parties arrested were allowed to give bail in the sum of $2,500 each. Charles L. Day, the junior member of the firm, is in Minneapolis, and therefore was not arrested. The news of the arrest did not leak out until this afternoon. This firm failed a few weeks ago for about $70,000. Larkein B. Day, after having consulted his attorney, said: "We are not to be tried in the newspapers, but will meet the charges when the proper time arrives. The arrest affects, I believe, only the individual members of the firm responsible for the amount claimed, but does not attack the title of the Receiver who was appointed last month."

    OSWEGO's SINGULAR CASE
James N. Baker died at Oswego on Saturday. He was to have been buried yesterday. Mr. Baker, when alive, frequently conversed with his wife about the horrors of being buried alive, and expressed fears that he himself should be so buried. Yesterday, although he had been apparently dead for two days, his lips and face retained a bright pink color, which indicated that there might still be life, although the body was rigid. A doctor pricked the body to several places, but no blood appeared. It was, however, thought best to postpone the burial.

James married Katherine Cotter Taylor in 1863 in Oswego, Oswego, NY. Katherine (daughter of Samuel Reynolds Taylor and Margaret Sinclair) was born on 24 Mar 1840 in Oriskany, Oneida, New York; died on 16 Jan 1926 in Chicago, Cook, IL; was buried in Oswego, Oswego, NY. But heaven had otherwise ordained; and the the morning of the 27th ult. her pure and gentle spirit bade farewell to the joys of earth for those which await the good in another and better world.
