James 2nd (Alexander 1st) was born in 1758 and died in October 8, 1831. m. Elizabeth. Their children were 3rd generation William, John James, Joseph, Isabella, Martha, and Rebecca. James 2nd (Alexander 1st) came over the mountains to western Pennsylvania in 1797, when Pittsburgh had been a trading station for about 38 years. He settled at Forks of Yough on land which was later partly in Allegheny County and partly in Westmoreland County. Other post-office addresses have been Gamble's Corner, Blythesdale, and R.R. 3 Elizabeth, Pa....
It was written on the back of these papers that the trip across the water from Ireland took fourteen weeks. These papers are in the possession of W. Edgar Woods of Elizabeth, Pa.

THE WOODS FAMILY were among the earliest settlers of West Salem Township. William and Mollie (Laird) Woods, natives of Ireland, immigrated to Philadelphia and thence to Westmoreland County, Penn., about 1792. In 1797 William took up the tract of land in West Salem whereon his grandson, Willis O. Woods, now lives, upon which he settled permenently the following year. Four children were born ere the removal of the family to the county, viz: Jane, Alexander, Thomas and Rebecca. William, now a resident of Page County, Iowa, was the first born in their new cabin home, his birth occuring in January, 1800. Mary, John W. and Betsy were born subsequently.

Frances M. Woods of Washington, D.C., in 1897 sent papers to Mr. and Mrs. James B. Secrist, West Newton, Pa., in which she said that her line was descended from James Woods, son of Sir John Woods. Sir John disinherited this son James because he married Deborah M'Lellan, a daughter of the gatekeeper. In Pennsylvania, as late as 1829, lived a James Woods who was of this line. He was brother of the father of Alexander Woods, 1768-1848. For sake of convenience we will call this father Alexander, 1st generation. Besides Alexander and James of this 1st generation were two sisters. One married and had son, James Leard, also called Laird. The other sister married and had a son, John Donnel....Undoubtedly all of Alexander's (1st) children were born in Tyrone County, Ireland. They were Alexander, James, John, William, Thomas, Robert, Isabella, and a daughter who married a man named Shannon....William 2nd (Alexander 1st) lived in Shenango, Mercer County, Pennsylvania. He was married and had several children, three of whom apparently died at or about the same time. In 1814 William visited his brother Alexander in Ohio. He went to see if that country pleased him better than did Pennsylvania but it did not. William died March 29, 1828, leaving his family "in good circumstances."

John 2nd (Alexander 1st) married Nancy and they had several children. In 1813 their sons ran the farm, near Greenville, Mercer County, Pennsylvania, and John worked "at the loom." Many years later John wrote to his brother James that he and his "woman" were frail but Nancy could still sit and spin some.

John and Mary (Little) Woods, natives of Ireland, who came to America while in childhood, were reared in Pennsylvania (Allegheny Co.), where they were married and resided till the spring of 1817, when they removed to Indiana and settled in Ohio County, where Mr. Woods entered 160 acres of forest land, which he cleared up and on which his son William now lives. He died in 1837, aged fifty-four years. His widow survived until 1865 and died, aged seventy-seven years. They were the parents of nine children, seven of whom grew to maturity and five now surviving; Valentine C., James A., William, Joseph and Margaret, now the wife of Pryor Oxley.

[The father of James C Woods], Joseph Woods, was born in Pennsylvania, in 1793; he came to Indiana in 1816, and settled in Dearborn county. Here he remained until 1837, when he removed to Jefferson county, into what is now Monroe township, where he died in 1853. He was one of the first Justices of the Peace in Dearborn county, and was elected to that office in Jefferson county, where he held the office for none to ten years, and was serving at the time of this death. The mother of James C. Woods was Miss Isabel Bushfield, daughter of Samuel Bushfield, all natives of Ireland. The family of Joseph Woods was composed of nine children, seven of whom lived to maturity.

RUFUS E. WOODS, a farmer of Pymatuning township, Mercer county, was born May 27, 1840, in Delaware township, that county, a son of Thomas Woods. His father was a native of Westmoreland county, Pennsylvania, who was born in 1801 and died in 1863, after the birth of his son (Rufus E., of this notice). The father settled on a farm in Delaware township, where he followed agriculture until his death. He was a devout Christian and belonged to the Presbyterian church. At first, he voted the Whig ticket, and later became a Republican. He married Rebecca Early, daughter of P. Early, of County Tyrone. Ireland. After the death of her father, she came with her mother and brother to America, locating in Mercer county, where she died in 1861, aged sixty years. The brothers and sisters of Rufus E. Woods were: John A., a farmer of Mercer county, Illinois: Jane, wife of D. S. Guipe, a retired carpenter of Minneapolis. Minnesota: Cyrus: William; Asa, Augustus; Rebecca, and Mary, all deceased.

Mr. Wm W. Wood, undoubtedly the oldest citizen of the county, died at the home of his son, L.P. Woods, yesterday at 11 p.m. He was a native of Pennsylvania and lived for 70 years on the farm where he was born, since that time in this county and near this city. The funeral was held today at the residence, Revs Smith and Westcott officiating. He was born Feb. 13, 1800, and at the time of his death was therefore 92 years, 4 months and 14 days old.

John W. was born on the old homestead in 1804, and grew to manhood under the parental roof. He was married January 6, 1835, to Jemima, daughter of Patrick McLaughlin, a native of Ireland, whose parents settled in this township in April, 1800. Mrs. Woods was born in Kinsman, Ohio, May 15, 1815, but came to West Salem in infancy. She is the mother of thirteen children: Laird, Electa J., deceased; Wilson, deceased; Elizabeth, deceased; John W., Alexander, Simeon, deceased; Oscar, deceased; Lyman B., Emeline, Willis O., Charles S. and Hattie. Mr Woods always followed farming, and died on the homestead March 17, 1869. He was a deacon of West Salem Baptist Church many years, and his widow has been life-long member of the same organization. He was a Republican in politics, and an upright, honest and liberal-hearted citizen, whom everyone respected. He was a kind father and husband, and his memory is revered by numerous descendents.

He was married three times: 1) Sarah Lynn MANN, a native of Maryland, daughter of Maj. Robert MANN, a soldier of 1812, and the family of Horace MANN. Ten children where born to William and Sarah.

NINETY YEARS OLD
On Saturday, August 15, 1896, a number of invited guests assembled at the home of his youngest son, W.P. Woods, to celebrate the 90th birthday anniversary of William J. Woods. Among those present: Mr. & Mrs. J.W. Toothacre, Mr. & Mrs. O. Hasen, Mr. & Mrs. J.S. Conard, Mr. & Mrs. Linias Fogle and family and Mrs. S.A. Pratt. After dinner congratulatory letters were read from James S. Peairs, of Shenandoah, Iowa, who said that he was 83 years old and that he and Mr. Woods were the only living members of their families of 18 persons. The Pierce branch of the family are still living on the old farm in Pennsylvania, which has been in possession of the same family without a break for 132 years. It was purchased from the Indians on a Tommyhawk right in 1776, the amount paid was leather for a pair of moccasins, by Elisha and Joseph Peairs. J.S. Peairs has the first deed in his possession which was all written in old style copper plate hand. The name is spelled Peairs there, although it is called Pierce now. Mr. Woods was born on that farm at Round Hill Church and learned to walk at Fort DeQuesne, now Pittsburg, where they had fled from an Indian scare. A Presbyterian church was built on the land, has been rebuilt twice, first of logs, then frame and now brick. Mr. Woods has been active in public life. He published the Galesburg Free Democrat at Galesburg, ILL., before the war and spent his money and time for the emancipation of the Negro. He helped build Amity College at College Springs, Iowa, and was a trustee of that institution for 10 years. Wm. died at the home of his niece, Mary Kessler, as a result of heart disease. He married Sarah L. Mann in 1826. She died in 1870 They had 7 sons and 3 daughters. Six sons and 3 daughters were still living when Wm. died in 1900.

Wm. originally belonged to the Presbyterian Church but later joined the Methodist Church because of the issue of slavery. He was very anti-slavery. Born August 15, 1806 in Merced County, Pennsylvania. His oldest daughter lived in Pittsfield, Illinois. The funeral took place in the home of Mrs. Kessler. He is buried in Highland Cemetery. The only grave in that plot. No marker.

Volentine C Woods was born in Allegheny, Pennsylvania, on December 1st, 1810. At the age of four years, his parents moved to Indiana where he lived for thirty-eight years. While living in Indiana, he married Miss Mary Neeley August 10th, 1830. To this union were born 13 children, eight boys and five girls, of those children 9 are living, four with the wife having proceeded the father and husband to the spirit world. Brother Woods was converted and joined the Methodist Episcopal Church when about twenty-five years of age and remained a communicant the remainder of his life. He was class leader and Sunday School Superintendent for years in West Liberty, Iowa where he held membership. The family moved from Indiana to a farm near West Liberty in Muscatine County, Iowa in 1852 where they lived until the year 1871, when he and his wife came to Clarke County, Iowa where the wife died. In 1884 he came to Cass County, Iowa and made his home with his son, Perry Woods, the remainder of his life. Brother Woods was a man of jovial and cheery disposition, beloved and honored by all who knew him and his goodness and cheer scattered sunshine about him. To his children, five of whom were present in his last hours, he expressed himself that all was well with him and that he was at peace with God and that there was no regrets only he had not been faithful in the last eight years of his life as he would have liked to have lived. Then passed away a veteran of the cross of Christ and like a true soldier regreting that he could not be in active service of his blessed master. He died after a lingering illness of about seven weeks of heart failure January 25th, 1899, age 88 years 1 month and 25 days. Funeral services were held at the residence of Perry Woods at 10 AM, February 27th, 1899, conducted by Rev. R.C.F. Cambers, Pastor of the M.E. Church of Wiota. After the services the remains were taken to Ottawa, Clarke County, Iowa and laid to rest beside his departed wife. They rest from their labors and their works do follow them.

Mr. James Woods, an aged and highly respected resident of Elizabeth township, Allegheny Co,. died Friday afternoon. Although he had been in delicate health for two or three years, it was not thought he was dangerously ill. His death, therefore, was a surprise and a shock to his many friends. Up to within a few day of his death he was able to go about through the house. Mr. Woods was well known to all the older citizens of the community and was recognized as one of the most honorable of men. He represented the third generation of a family of the early settlers of Western Pennsylvania, his grand-father having taken out the patent on the land which has ever since been the home of the family. He was in his 74th year, the dae of his birth being March 5th, 1821. He leaves a wife and grown up family. His oldest son Dr. John S. Woods is a prominent physician of Kansas City. William H. and Joseph B. are farmers and live on the home place. Lizzie is the wife of Mr. John C. Carothers, a prosperous farmer near West Newton, Bertie, the youngest of the family married Mr. R.C. Crowthers, a wholesale coal agent of Cincinnati, O. The funeral services will be held at the family residence at 8 o'clock to-morrow Tuesday, Feb 19th. Interment at Fell's church, the family burying ground. In the passing away of James Woods, the community loses one of its most upright citizens, and a large circle of friends will mourn his death.

JAMES C WOODS, farmer, Monroe township, was bron in 1928, in Dearborn county, Ind.; was raised on a farm, and educated in the common schools. His father, Joseph Woods, was born in Pennsylvania, in 1793; he came to Indiana in 1816, and settled in Dearborn county. Here he remained until 1837, when he removed to Jefferson county, into what is now Monroe township, where he died in 1853. He was one of the first Justices of the Peace in Dearborn county, and was elected to that office in Jefferson county, where he held the office for none to ten years, and was serving at the time of this death. The mother of James C. Woods was Miss Isabel Bushfield, daughter of Samuel Bushfield, all natives of Ireland. The family of Joseph Woods was composed of nine children, seven of whom lived to maturity. Mr. James C. Woods, at the age of 22, began to learn the trade of coach blacksmithing. He served part of his time in Madison, Ind., and finished at Frankfort, Ky. He worded at this trade for five years. He married Susan A. Read, in December, 1852. She was the daughter of Andrew Read, a native of Virginia, who removed to Kentucky after his daughter was born. He was of Scotch-Irish extraction. His father, Frank Read, was a Revolutionary soldier, and he, himself, was a soldier in the War of 1812-15. Her mother's family, of French extraction named Leftwich were early settlers of Virginia. The result of this marriage was six children, viz: Belle, Kate, Elizabeth, Anna, Howard, and Ida. Kate is married to George Craig, and lives in Johnson county, Ind.; the others are at home, except Belle, who is at Indianapolis, Ind. Mr. Woods owns 200 acres of good land, well improved. Is a member of the I.O.O.F. and the Grange. Once hold the office of township treasurer, and is a good citizen.

A telegram has been received here announcing the death of Rev. John Woods at Urbana. The new came as a great shock to his friends, as only three weeks ago he preached in the Presbyterian church here. He was the son of John Woods.

Rev. John Woods, D.D., of Urbana, O., died very suddenly at his home on May 6, in the eightieth year of his age. He was an earnest and devoted minister of the gospel, whose wise and evangelical articles have often appeared in the columns of the Herald and Presbyter. He was born June 19, 1938 in Hamilton, O., graduated at Miami University and Princeton Seminary, and was ordained in 1961 by the Presbytery of Oxford. His charges were at Urbana, O., Bloomingburg, O., Ninth Church of Chicago, Ill., Fort Wayne, Ind., Chico, Cal., Cedar Falls, Ia., Andrew Church of Minneapolis, and Merriam Park Church of St. Paul, Newark, O., Luddington, Mich., and New Carlisle, O. He served as chaplain in the Civil War, and for a time was professor of mental and moral science at Macalester College. He was a man of ability and great usefulness in a long and consecrated life.

"Died, at her home near Weston, Neb., Mrs. Carrie Woods Wickard, on Wednesday morning Sept. 4th, 1889, at the age of 51 years, 9 months and 1 day. She was buried in the Weston cemetery Sept 5, Rev Belville officiating at the funeral services. Mrs. Wickard was born in Oxford, Butler County, Ohio, Dec 4 1838. At the age of 19 she was married to Jacob M Wickard. Shortly after their marriage they moved to Logansport, Ind., where they lived about 11 years. From Indiana they came to this state and settled on their farm a short distance southwest of Weston, where they lived when Mrs. Wickard died. Thirteen children were born to them, eleven boys and two girls. Six boys, with the father survive the mother. Mrs Wickard has been a confirmed invalid for over five years, nearly two of which time she was scarcely able to move hand or foot. She became a member of the Presbyterian church at the age of 16 years and maintained her Christian integrity up to her death. She was baptized, we are informed, by President Harrison's father, who was a minister of the Presbyterian church near her childhood home. Mr. and Mrs. Wickard were charter members of the Presbyterian church of Wahoo. She died full of faith and hope for the better life, and though suffering severely all the time, she was patiently waiting for her summons to the eternal home, which came Wednesday morning, Sept. 4. 'Well done, good and faithful servant.'" - contributors note - I think that she was actually baptized by Pres. Harrison's father in law, John W. Scott.

ERASTUS L. BEAN DEAD COLLEGE SPRINGS VETERAN
College Springs, March 28.?Another of our old soldiers has passed to his eternal home. Erastus L. Bean, one of Page county oldest settlers, was born near Greenville, Mercer county, Penn., in 1833. In 1856 he went to Oxford, Ill., where he was married a year later to Miss Amelia Blair. To this union eight children were born, four sons, Frank. Siegal, Grant and Jay, all o£ whom died in infancy, and four daughters who grew to womanhood, Mrs. Emma Estella Turner, who died in 1890, Mrs. Ella Maud Harland, who died in 1910, Mrs. Ella McGinnis of College Springs and Mrs. Edna Smith of Aberdeen, S. D. Mr. Bean enlisted in the 83d Ill., at the beginning of the war and he served faithfully until its close, at which time he was honorably discharged at Knoxville, Tenn. After the war Mr. and Mrs. Bean with their children moved to their farm west of College Springs where they lived many years. Because of failing health they rented their farm and moved into College Springs. Mrs. Bean died at her home here in 1912. Mr. Bean was a charter member of the Methodist Episcopal church of College Springs which was organized in 1867 by Rev. Martin. He was a loyal member and a true christian man. For some months his health has been gradually failing and recently a severe cold proved too much for his frail strength. On Monday evening, March 23, he passed away. He leaves to mourn his death two daughters and eight grandchildren, he being the last of his father's family to pass away. The funeral services were held Wednesday afternoon from the Methodist Episcopal church and were conducted by Rev. Enoch Hill. Interment was made in the West Grove cemetery. Mrs. Edna Bean Smith or Aberdeen, S. D., has been here the past two weeks and was with her father at his death. Mr. Smith arrived in time for the funeral. Mr. Harland another son-in-law, and his two children also came from Shenandoah to attend the funeral.

Mrs. Caroline Bean, wife of J.M. Bean, of Hempfield, died at her home, Sabbath evening, February 21. The deceased had been in feeble health for a number of years, but her end was hastened by the prevailing epidemic, la grippe. She leaves a husband and five sons, J.A., of Iowa; A.L., on the old homestead; Dr. O.W., Conneautville; N.J., Youngstown, and Jay M., Sonora, Iowa. Her entire family, bedide a large circle of frieds and relatives, mourn her loss. She was born in this county, August 29, 1819, being at the time of her death 72 years, 5 months and 22 days old. She has been, since very early in life, connected with some branch of the Presbyterian Church and for a number of years a consistent member of the United Presbyterian Church of this place. But she was eminently a Christian mother, and although she is dead her influence still lives in her home and in the homes of her sones. The funeral services were conducted at ther late home, by her pastor, Rev. J.C. Scouller, when the body was placed in the receiving vault to await the arrival of absent sons, and interred the following day.

Last Saturday afternoon, Mr. Abner Woods, living just west of the city, died quite suddenly from heart failure. Mr. Woods had been in poor health nearly all winter, but such an end was not expected and came with a sad shock to a large circle of friends. Mr. Woods was born in Mercer Co., Pa., in 1824, and thus was 70 years old at the time of his death. In 1852 he was united in marriage with the lady who survives him and mourne his sudden death. In March, 1964, with his family, he came to Paweshiek and settled in Chester twp., where for thirteen years, he was known as a willing worker in every good cause. In the sping of 1877 Mr. Woods moved to his late home near Grinnell, which he fitted up until it was one of the handsomest rural homes in this vacinity. The funeral was held at the house yesterday afternoon conducted by the Rev. E.M. Vittum, in charge of Mr. W.O. Willard, for years a warm family friend. A large company of neighbors followed the body to Hazelwood, in this way silently testifying to their recognition of an upright life that had passed away, for Mr. Woods was a man of the highest integrity, one whose word was never questioned, and who did to others as he would have done them do to him. The community loses one of its citizens, and his family mourn a loving husband and father. A wife, two sons and four daughters survive him. Among the funeral decorations was a beautiful floral gift of the ladies of the Bible class of the Congregational church, the ladies wishing in a appropriate way to express sympathy for friends and members of the class.

Elvira Woods was born in Mercer county, Pa., May, 1830. She passed away January 28, 1916. She had six sisters and two brothers. All but one, Miss Ermina Woods of Grinnell, Iowa preceded her to their home in Heaven. Her girlhood days were spent with her mother, brothers and sisters,. her father died when she was a little child. She received her education in the home schools and in the Kingsville Academy, Ohio. Miss Woods taught in home school in Clarksville, also in Greenville and Meadville, Pa. and was very successful in the work. Here mother died in 1866. The last word of the mother to Elvira were, "Stand by Melissa." She gave the promise and soon after the mother was laid to rest, she went to her sister's home to care for her in sickness and nelp her care for the lottle family. Melissa (Mrs. McClelland) and family came west to Page county and she followed them. For a time she taught in Page county, but after several terms, the sister's health failing, she gave up teaching to minister to her sister and family, remaining with them until Mr. and Mrs. McClelland both died. Elvira remembered her promise to her mother and took up the work that her sister and husband had been taken from. To the two children, Elvira gave a mother's care until they went into homes of their own. Since then she has lived with them, taking turns about the families of Mr. McClelland and Mrs. Walter Mitchell. She died at the Mitchell home. Miss Woods united with the Presbyterian church in Clarksville, when young. On coming to Page county she became one of the charter members of the Presbyterian church at Yorktown and gave many rears of faithful service. Her motto was, "even Jesus pleased not Himself." The funeral of Elvira Woods who was know at Yorktown at "Aunt Vie" was held Sunday the Presbyterian church at 2 p.m., conducted by Rev. Driver. Many beautiful flowers furnished by the church, the Borthwick families and others, were placed upon the casket. The bearers were John Gwynn, Rudy Heninger, Joe Morrison, Harry and Ollie Kenagy and David Stitt of Clarinda. Music was furnished by a quartet from Clarinda. Burial was at Summit cemetery.

Sharon, Pa., Aug. 23 - Lester B. Woods, aged 79, one of the best-known farmers in Jefferson township, died Wednesday. Mr. Woods was born Aug. 29, 1832, on the farm where he died. This farm belonged to his great grandfather. He followed farming all his life. He was a member of the First Presbyterian church of Clarksville. He leaves the following children: William of Meadville, Pa.; Ralph of Sharon; Carl, at home, and Dwight of Jefferson township; Mary and Elizabeth, at home.

MISS ERMINA WOODS CALLED BY DEATH
Ermina Ann Woods was born January 2, 1837, in Mercer County, Pennsylvania and died October 7, 1928 in Grinnell, Iowa. She was the daughter of Alexander and Mary Bean Woods and was the last of a family of ten children. The parents were of Scotch-Irish ancestry and were pioneers in western Pennsylvania. The father was one of the first to discontinue the custom of using liquor in the harvent fields. Ermina was educated in the common schools and studied music at Oberlin College. She afterwards taught music and was also a teacher in the public schools in different places both east and west. About 1870 she came west to Chester, Iowa, where her brother Abner Woods was then living. Since then she has spent the greater part of her life in different places in Iowa and for a number of years has made her home with her nieces west of Grinnell. She leaves fifteen nieces and nephews, some living in the east and others in different western states. When a young woman she was a member of the Presbyterian church in Clarksville, Pa. She afterwards transferred her membership to the Congregational church in Chester, Iowa, and at the time of her death was a member of the First Congregational church of Grinnell. In spite of her advanced age she retained her mental faculties to a remarkable degree and up the day of her death was a constant reader and interested in all the news of the day. Funeral services, conducted by Rev. E.M. Wittum, were held at the Woods home Monday afternoon at 3 o'clock and the body was sent to Yorktown, Iowa for interment.

He was a native of this county and until recently lived on a farm near Fredonia. He was well and favorable known. He leaves a widow, formerly Mary A. RUFUS E. WOODS, a farmer of Pymatuning township, Mercer county, was born May 27, 1840, in Delaware township, that county, a son of Thomas Woods. His father was a native of Westmoreland county, Pennsylvania, who was born in 1801 and died in 1863, after the birth of his son (Rufus E., of this notice). The father settled on a farm in Delaware township, where he followed agriculture until his death. He was a devout Christian and belonged to the Presbyterian church. At first, he voted the Whig ticket, and later became a Republican. He married Rebecca Early, daughter of P. Early, of County Tyrone. Ireland. After the death of her father, she came with her mother and brother to America, locating in Mercer county, where she died in 1861, aged sixty years. The brothers and sisters of Rufus E. Woods were: John A., a farmer of Mercer county, Illinois: Jane, wife of D. S. Guipe, a retired carpenter of Minneapolis. Minnesota: Cyrus: William; Asa, Augustus; Rebecca, and Mary, all deceased. Rufus E. Woods, attended school until he was seventeen vears of age and learned the shoemaker's trade at Kinsman. Trumbull county. Ohio, working there for three years. On August 14, 1862. he enlisted in Company B, One Hundred and Twenty-fifth Ohio Volunteers, under Captain Albert Yeomans. From Cleveland the command was ordered to Louisville, Kentucky, and then to Nashville. Tennessee. Mr. Woods participated in the battles of Franklin. Tennessee, Chickamauga. Rocky Face Ridge. Resaca. Peach Tree Creek, Atlanta. Jonesborough, and Nashville. He was numbered among the wounded at Missionary Ridge, sent to hospital at Chattanooga, and given a sixty-day furlough (during which time he returned to Ohio). After he rejoined his regiment he accompanied General Sherman's forces through Georgia, under Colonel Updyke. the command being styled "Updyke's Tigers." The last battle in which Mr. Woods was engaged was at Nashville. He was mustered out under Capt. Ridgley C. Powers. August 14, 1865, under command of General Moody. Mr. Woods served as sergeant, and was commissioned lieutenant when the war closed. He then returned to Mercer county and settled in Pyrnatuning township. Mr. Wood purchased his present farm home in 1899. and in connection with his general operations carries on the dairy business. During 1908 he built one of the largest barns for stock purposes within the township. His place is styled ''Grand View Farm," and is one of the model homesteads of Mercer county. On August 23, 1865, Mr. Woods married Marilla Klingensmith, daughter of Jacob K. and Catherine ( Artherholt) Klingensmith, farmers of Pyrnatuning township. The children born of this union were as follows : Grace M.. who died in infancy, and Ransom D., now managing his father's farm. Ifl his religious convictions, Mr. Woods is in harmony with the teachings of the Baptist faith, being a communicant of the church at Transfer, Pennsylvania. Politically, he votes the Republican ticket. Mr. and Mrs. Woods are members of the P. H. C. Lodge No. 63 at Transfer, Pennsylvania.

Rufus E. Woods, of Transfer, was found dead in bed Wednesday morning. The physician after an examination declared that death was due to apoplexy. Mr. Woods has not been very well of late and for that reason he did not attend the Gettysburg reunion, although he was a soldier. He was well enough on Monday and Tuesday to assist with the harvest bur remained in the house on Wednesday. The passing of William Norris Woods, on Oct. 27th at his home on W. Clark Street, closes the life career of one of the earliest settlers of this section or country. Mr. Woods helped to lay out the city of College Springs, being there before houses had been built, and years ahead of any towns as Clarinda or Shenandoah. He came in the days when the covered wagon route was the most popular means of travel, and when the railway had been built only 25 miles this side of the Mississippi River, it being necessary to make the trip from Mt. Pleasant, Iowa, to Page County in a buggy or wagon. The first settlers to the present site of College Springs came as a committee from Monmouth, Ill., to choose a site for a college. Finding the fine spring of never failing water there, gave the name "Springs" to the town, and as they shortly after started Amity College at the new settlement, the town was names College Springs. Then came Mr. Woods, forming part of the vanguard of civilization, religion. and education in this country. Two years later in 1859 the Dow family came to become a part of the settlement. One member of the Dow family was Miss Mary Elizabeth Dow, who was married in 1859 to William N. Woods, and lives at the home in Clarinda surviving her husband. As time passed, children were born into the home. but all have passed over except the daughter, Miss Melicent Woods, who survives to be the protector of her mother. But the family have not lived in this vicinity all these years. Early in life Wllliam Woods had joined the Free Presbyterian Church, at their home back in Pennsylvania. The name Free came from their being enemies to slavery, which then existed in the south. When the movement started toward Kansas, struggling to make the new state free instead of slave, the William Woods family moved to Kansas, and have lived in other places, including Kentucky. They came to Clarinda in 1886, and have lived in Page County during the intervening years. Mr. Woods was born December 8, 1829, being thus not quite 96 years
of age. He comes from a long lived, family having a sister who died last spring at the age of 87, while his grandfather died and was burled in Clarinda at the age of 92 years. Two of his brothers are living, Prof. J.A. Woods of Ellisport, Wash., who was former superintendent of schools in Clarinda and an early school teacher here and L.P. Woods now resident at Kirksville. Mo. Funeral services for William N. Woods were held Friday morning from the Harmon Funeral Home, conducted by the Rev. Alfred T. Bishop, D.D., the Presbyterian
church here being without a regular pastor at this time. Interment was in Clarinda cemetery.

Until twenty-one years of age his education was very limited; he then began a systematic course of training, and entered Marietta College , Ohio , where he remained until 1862; in February of that year he came to Page county. Shortly after he became the principal of the schools, and has retained that position until the present day-a service of eighteen years. Mr. Woods was married to Miss Esther I. Hill, a native of Ohio , June 18, 18__. They are the parents of two children: Charles E. and Ettie. Mr. Woods has accumulated all he is worth since his residence in this county. His farm of 310 acres is one of the finest in the county. He is a man of sterling worth and stable character, whom to know is to respect.

James Alfred Woods was born Feb 7, 1835, on a farm near Greenville, Mercer county, Penn., and remained on his father's farm until he reached the age of twenty-one. He then entered Marietta College at Marietta, Ohio, where he received his college education. In 1862 he came to Clarinda, Iowa, to accept the position of teacher in the public schools. July 4, 1864, he was married to Esther Irene Hill in Marietta, Ohio, and returned to Clarinda with his bride. From this union two children were born, Charles E. Wood of Ellesport, Wash., who survived him, and Etta Ollieretta, who passed away some five years ago. Prof. Woods, who began his teaching in Clarinda in the lower grades, was at the close of the first year promoted to the principalship and later to be city superintendent of the city schools. His connection with the schools were a total of thirty school years with two short intervals when he was otherwise employed. Prof. Woods organized the first public school system in Red Oak, Iowa, where he taught for two years in the early seventies. He also taught seven years in Keithsburg, Ill., which closed his teaching experience. Esther Irene Woods departed this life in June, 1916. Dec 30, 1917, Prof Woods was married to Mrs Josephine Berry Crickenbarger. Prof. Woods continued to reside in Clarinda until March, 1924, when he and Mrs Woods joined their son, Charles, at Ellesport, Wash., where they spent the remainder of their lives. Prof Woods departed this life March 22, 1917 [sic,1927] at Ellesport, Wash., and his wife passed away two days later. Funeral services were held in Washington and a Memorial service was held for both Mr and Woods in the Presbyterian church at Clarinda on April 3, 1927, and the ashes of both were laid to rest in the Clarinda cemetery, according to the expressed wish of each. Prof Woods was an active member and worker of the first Presbyterian church from 1862 until his {???} strength prevented further work. He was for many years an elder in this church. Prof Woods' great life work was among his students, who are scattered through many states and lands, and their esteem of him is the greatest monument that could be erected to him. In the affections of those who knew him he still lives.

Mary Melvina Woods was born in West Salem , Mercer County, Pa. October 29, 1837. She was married to Ezra Williamson, a local preacher of the M.E. Church September 17, 1863. With her husband she came to Clarinda in May 1871, and later lived in Nebraska where Mr. Williamson did the work of a minister as long as he lied. Returning to Clarinda after the death of Mr. Williamson she resided with her parents. William and Phoebe Woods, until they entered their rest and since then her home has been with her brothers, Alfred and Lee, the last nine years with Lee in Kirksville, Missouri. She united with the Presbyterian Church in Pennsylvania at the age of 12. After the death of her husband she placed her membership again in the Presbyterian Church and there it remained in Clarinda and Kirksville until she died April 3, 1925 in the 88th year of her life. Hers was a quiet and very useful life. She was very much loved by all who knew her. There was a sweetness in her touch and a brightness in her smile that everybody welcomed and remembered. Her remains were brought to Clarinda for burial. Her funeral services were held Tuesday from Pruitt's conducted by Dr. A.B. Marshall pastor of the Presbyterian Church of Clarinda and her body was laid to rest in the Clarinda cemetery. Three brothers survive her, Wm. N. of Clarinda, Jno. A. of Ellispont, Washington, and Lee of Kirksville, Mo.

WILSON WOODS was born in Mercer Co., Pa. Dec. 25, 1842, and died Nov. 24, 1889, of heart disease, aged 46 years, 10 months, 29 days. He was married to Miss Mary Ellen VanArsdol Aug. 27, 1868. He united with the Presbyterian church in Clarinda in April, 1865. In 2865 he was elected deacon, in which office he served the church with fidelity even unto the end. He died, as he had lived, a quiet, ostentatious Christian. He said to his friends, "If this is death, then there is nothing terrible in dying;" and again "I am just on the border of eternity." For some years he was a member of the choir, and on Sabbath afternoon some of those who had been associated with him in it, met at his bedside and sang to him as he moved off the shore of time, some of the familiar and sweet songs of the Lord's House. ... Peace be to his memory.

The death is announced at Dallas, Ore., of Dr. Laird N. Woods, a prominent physician of Polk County. Dr. Woods was born in Greenville, Pa., October 10, 1835. He came to Oregon 23 years ago and located in Dallas. He is survived by a widow and five children.

Dr. Laird M. Woods, of Dallas, Oregon, died at his home February 12, 1906, so septicemia, resultant of a carbuncle, aged 70 years. He formerly served as coroner of Polk County, in which Dallas is situated, and before that as burgess of Wheatland, Pa., for several terms, when he resided in that place. He was also for ten years Surgeon of the Pennsylvania railroad. He graduated from the University of Buffalo in 1872.

MILLHISER - Lizzie, wife of C. Millhiser, and daughter of John and Jemima Woods, of Mercer county, Pa., peacefully fell asleep in Jesus, near Marshalltown Iowa, April 27, 1872, aged 30 years, 8 months, and 1 day. The deceased was born July, 1841 in Mercer county, Pa., experienced a change of heart at the age of 16, and united with the Close-Communion Baptists near the home of her parents, following up the doctrine of her profession by the chaste walk and Godly conversation. She entered the bonds of holy matrimony with her now bereaved and deeply sarrowing husband in January, 1870. Shortly after, she felt childhood-home, came to Iowa, and united with the Evangelical Association, remaining an active member till death called her home. She died shouting the praise of the Redeemer.
A few hours before her departure she requested the friends to sing. They tried - but O, who could? Sorrow overflowed the heart. Observing this, she started and sang, in a clear, full voice, the stanza -
"Jesus all the day long,
Was my joy and my song.
O, that all his salvation might see!
He hath loved me, I cried.
He hath suffered and died.
To redeem such a rebel as me!"
She then called on Father Millhiser to pray, after which she made personal appeals to several around her bed, urging to greater activity in God's service. "O, work!" said she: "Work , all of you! Work for the Lord! Glory to God! Praise Him! Praise the Lord!" In answer to the question - "The water are not deep, are they, Libbie?" she answered, "No, no; I am almost over - almost home." She then continued praising God for several hours before her death. "Till day dawns." she said; and a little after nine o'clock she fell sweetly asleep in the arms of her Savior, calmly, peacefully, as one entering the realm of dreams.
Funeral services by Rev. L J Fisher, of Marshalltown, from Luke xxiv, 17. She leaves an infant daughter five days old, a sorrowing husband and a large circle of friends to mourn her departure.

John Wellington Woods, aged 83 years, died early Tuesday morning at his home near Andover, O., after a long illness. He as the son of John and Jemima McLaughlin Woods and was born in West Salem township, March 25, 1843. Surviving are his wife, Sarah Rebecca Woods, on daughter, Mrs. H. H. Mohr, Greenville, R. D., six grandchildren and six great grandchildren. Short funeral services are to be held from his home near Andover Wednesday afternoon at 2 p.m. after which the remains will be removed to the home of his daughter, Mrs. H. H. Mohr at Maysville. Funeral services will be held in the West Salem Baptist church on Thursday morning at 10 o'clock, with interment following in the Shenango Valley cemetery.

Funeral Services were held Thursday for J. Wellington Woods, who died at his home near Andover, September 14. The deceased was born in West Salem, March 25, 1843. In 1866 he married Clarinda Brown and two of their four children, Mrs. H. H. Mohr and Ernest A. Woods, survive. Mrs. Woods, and Mrs. H. H. Melvin, and Clarence Woods, the children, preceded the father in death, a number of years ago. Six grandchildren and six great-grandchildren also survive. In 1915, the deceased married Mrs. George Johnson, since which time they resided near Andover, where his wife still lives. Mr. Woods was a Civil War veteran, having been in Company F, 199th Regiment, Pennsylvania Volunteers. He united with the West Salem Baptist church in 1869. Mr Woods was the last surviving member of a family of 13 children, being a son of John and Jemima Woods, who lived long and useful lives in West Salem township, having been pioneers in that section. Funeral services were conducted by Rev. Clelland, of Kinsman, assisted by Re. Porterfield, of Franklin, a fomer pastor of West Salem Baptist church. The body was interred in the Shenango Valley cemetery.

The news of death of Alexander A. Woods which occured in Springwater last Friday evening. May 26, 1916, came as a great surprise to Caledonia people as it was not known but that he was enjoying the best of health. Mr. Woods was a man who made friends wherever he went and consequently everyone who know him feel that they have lost a valued friend. He was born in Grenville, Pa., 72 years ago, and most of his early years was spent in the oil fields of Pennsylvania. He served one year in the war and was with General Grant at Appomatox, and was a member of the G.A.R. During later years he held positions as druggist in Caledonia, Attica, Le Roy, Fillmore, Buffalo and lastly Springwater. Deceased leaves one daughter, Mrs. Harold J. Baker, and one son, Ralph A. Woods, both of Tulsa, Oklahoma; also four grandchildren. His wife, whose maiden name was Nellie Walker, died eighteen years ago. He also leaves a brother of Greenville and a number of nieces and nephews. The remains were taken to Greenville and buried in the family lot. Mrs. R.A. Woods went to Greenville to attend the funeral. Funeral services were held Tuesday afternoon. Members of the G.A.R Post of Greenville and the 199th Pennsylvania regiment in which Mr. Woods, enlisted attended the funeral.

Springwater Pharmacist Dies Suddenly of Acute Indigestion.
Springwater, May 28. - A.A. Woods, a pharmacist who formerly resided in Caledonia, died suddenly here early yesterday morning in the home of Mr. and Mrs. Clarence E. Densmore, at the age of 72 years. Mr. Woods had not been feeling well for the past month but had been able to be at the store the most of the time. He had been at his work as usual and about 4 o'clock last night was taken suddenly ill and died shortly after the arrival of physicians. Mr. Woods had been employed at the Densmore store only since March 1st, but in that short time he had made many friends. He leaves one son, Ralph, and one daughter, both of Pulfat, Okla., and one daughter-in-law , Mrs. Maude Root, of Caledonia. The remains were taken to Caledonia last night and this morning were taken to Greenville, Pa., for burial.

Willis O. Woods, whose death was noted last week, as occurring March 30, was in his 43rd year. He had been a great sufferer for more than three years from a disease that defied the skill of many physicians. He was widely known and respected throughout the community. He was married on March 30, 1882, to Miss Ella J Swigart, of Brookville, daughter of Rev. D. W. Swigart., and died on their fifteenth anniversary. His widow and six children survive him. Mr. Woods was a sincere Christian, having been for years a consistent member of the Transfer Baptist Church. He was also a highly respected member of Knights of Pythias and was excorted to his grave by a delegation of that order. His funeral services were conducted at the Maysville church by paster, Rev. O. R. Thomas, assisted by Rev. J. T. Davis. He was laid to rest in the Shenango Valley cemetery in Greenville. The sympathy of many friends is extended to the bereaved family.

Mr. and Mrs. C. S. Woods, of Grinnel, Iowa, are visiting relatives in the vicinity of Greenville. Wellington Woods, of West Salem, is a brother, as is Lyman Woods, of Polk. Mr. Woods has not been in Greenville for 37 years and it is 41 years since Mrs. Woods was here.

CHARLES SHERMAN WOODS CLOSES LIFE'S JOURNEY
Charles Sherman Woods, son of Mr. and Mrs. John Woods was born in Mercer County, Pa., Sept. 27, 1857 and passed away at his home in Grinnell, Thursday, Dec. 10 at the age of 68 years, 2 months and 13 days. His boyhood days were spent in the Pennsylvania home where he attended the common schools. At the age of 19 he came to Marshall County, Ia., where he engaged as a butter-maker. In 1879 Mr. Woods was married to Margaret Ella Graham, and the young couple began housekeeping near Marshalltown. They continued to reside in Marshall county until they moved to Grinnell twenty years ago where they have resied since. For the past five years Mr. Woods has been tin the emply of the Rock Island Railway. Eight children came to bless the home, five sons: Graham, Laird, Archie, Fred and Clarence and three daughters: Zella, Grace and Hallie. All of these are living. In addition to the devoted wife Mr. Woods has two brothers living: J.W. of Andover, Ohio, and Lyman B. of Polk, Pa., and seven grand children. The deceased was a member of the Methodist Episcopal Church. He was a man of quiet unassuming ways, kindly and courteous, and always thoughtful and considerate of others. He was a good neighbor, a worthy citizen, and was deeply devoted to his home and his interests. It means the passing of a good man who will be sincerely mourned by all who knew him. The funeral, conducted by Rev. W. B. Wilson was held at the home on Main Street at 4 o'clock Sunday. The body was taken to State Center, Monday forenoon for burial. Those attending the funeral from out of town were J. W. Brison of Plainville, Kansas, Mr. and Mrs. Geo Coburn, Mrs. H. W. Ogan, Miss Ross Stacy and Mr. and Mrs. Eli Lane of Marshalltown, Mrs. Henry Sanderman of Owatonna, Minn., Mr. and Mrs. Fred Woods and Graham Woods of Davenport, Ia., Dr. and Mrs. L. Woods and daughter of Malcom and Clarence Woods of Marshalltown, Iowa.

HERMAN MELVIN, one of the farmers who have assisted in the material development of that goodly portion of Mercer county known as West Salem township, was born there, on his father's old homestead. May 30, 1857, the son of Squire Lester Melvin, who was born September 15, 1831. Squire Melvin attended school until seventeen years of age, after which he was engaged in farming at home. May 31, 1855, he was united in marriage to Mary Miller, born June i, 1834, a daughter of Henry Miller and wife, of West Salem township. The name of the mother of Mrs. Melvin was Bortz. Henry Miller died at the age of eighty-five years, and his wife when seventy-four years. His father, John R. Melvin, was born on the old Melvin homestead in 1802, and married to 1829 to Elizabeth Woods, who was born March 16, 1806, and died June 2, 1846. The great-grandfather of Herman Melvin. Richard Melvin, died in 1824, and the great-grandmother in 1816. This venerable couple located and cleared up the old homestead where so many of the family have been born and reared. It contained three hundred acres and was all finely improved by the various generations of Melvins. It has been in the possession of the family for over two hundred years. Herman Melvin attended the common schools of his native district until about twenty-one years of age, and continued working at home until twenty-eight, when he took possession of part of the old place, so sacred to the memory of the Melvin family. He is making the place better each year and keeps up the good reputation of the Melvins as agriculturists. Politically Mr. Melvin is a Democrat and at present is holding the office of tax collector of his township ; also is constable and has served as an assessor one term. He was married January 27, 1887, to Delia Woods, born March 18, 1869, a daughter of J. W. Woods, a farmer at Maysville, Pennsylvania, whose wife's name before marriage was Clarinda Brown. The children born to Mr. and Mrs. Melvin are Glenn Ord, aged twelve years, and Harry Lester, aged five years. Mr. Melvin 's brothers and sisters were: John H., a farmer in West Salem township; Allen E., George B. (both deceased); Ida, at home; Susan, wife of G. F. Reimold, a farmer of Otter Creek township; and Solome, at home with her sister Ida, and these sisters are keeping house for the father.

Mrs. Emeline Laird, widow of the late John Laird, died at her home on Mercer street, Saturday afternoon, February 9. Mrs. Laird was the daughter of John R. Melvin and was born in West Salem, June 5, 1833, and was in her 62nd year. Mr. and Mrs. Laird moved into Greene township twenty-five years ago, where they lived on their farm until Mr. Laird's health became so bad, nearly three years ago, that they moved to this place, where he soon after died at their residence on Canton street. Mrs. Laird has never been quite well since her husband's death and for more than a year has been confined to the house. Last week she grew rapidly worse and steadily failed until she died. She was the mother of two sons, J.A. and W.F., and one daughter, Clara, all of whom survive her. She became a member of the West Salem Baptist Church early in life and subsequently transferred her membership to Jamestown and about two years ago to the Baptist Church in this place. She passed peacefully to her rest in the blessed hope of the gospel. Her funeral was conducted at her home on Monday afternoon by her pastor, Rev. J.T. Davis, assited by Rev. Dr. J.N. Fredenburgh.

Isaac Newell "I.N." Woods was born in Mercer County, Pennsylvania, on May 29, 1841, to John Sears and Mary Ann ?Polly? (Hazen) Woods. He came to Pike County, Illinois, with his parents in 1843, where he grew to manhood. I.N. enlisted in the Civil War in 1861 in Company I, 28th Illinois Volunteers. He was later promoted to Corporal of Co.B, then Lieutenant of Co.F. He was wounded in the Battle of Shiloh in April, 1862, and mustered out of service on April 6, 1866. I.N. settled on a farm in Lucas County, Iowa, in 1868. He married Augusta A. Miller on March 24, 1869. She was born in Brown County, Ohio, in 1841 and came to Iowa with her parents in 1853, settling on a farm in Lucas County where she grew to womanhood. They had six children, and Augusta passed away on February 7, 1989. Augusta united with the M.E. Church over twenty years before her death. She is buried at the Woodburn Cemetery. For many years, I.N. was engaged in the hardware and implement business at Woodburn, and was also a postmaster there for several years. After leaving Woodburn, he traveled to Ohio for some time, and later made his home with his sons, F.M. Woods of Ottumwa and J.L. Woods of Cedar Rapids. He spent his winters in Florida. I.N. died at his son?s home in Ottumwa on May 12, 1912, and was laid to rest in the Woodburn Cemetery with Masonic honors.

Seth Woods, one of the early settlers of this city, died from blood poisoning caused by his stepping on a nail about a year ago. At that time, the wound healed, lately it began to bother him and he was forced to have a part of the foot amputated. For a time this gave him relief, but last Saturday he became unconscious and passed away Monday, July 17. The funeral services were conducted by his brother Masons at the residence, Tuesday and they laid him to rest in Woodlawn Cem. He was born in Venango, Pennsylvania, April 11, 1837, and moved to Illinois in childhood and to Atkinson in 1884.

For More Than Forty Years Practiced in Payson and Quincy, Being Known as One of Leading Eye and Ear Specialists in This Section of the Country - Had Distinguished Record, as Surgeon With Union Army During the Civil War. ----
Dr. Reuben Woods, one of the oldest and most widely known members of his profession in Illinois, died at his home in Quincy, 1807 Jersey street, at 10 o'clock Wednesday evening at the advanced age of eighty-eight years. He retired from active practice several years ago and for many months the infirmities of advancing years have confined him to his home. With characteristic patience he bore the affliction of his steadily failing strength, ever thoughtful for those about him, greeting his friends with a smile and a flash of his native wit, ever grateful for the kindly offices of those who cared for him. He was spared from suffering during his illness and when the final summons came he quietly closed his eyes in eternal sleep."

Reuben was a prominent ear, nose and throat specialist. He was a surgeon during the Civil War and among the first to use anethesia during the Civil War. One of Founders of Quincy Humane Society and member of the University Club of Chicago.

JOHN WOODS, formerly postmaster and once owner of the Joliet Republican, died of apoplexy at Joliet yesterday. Mr. Woods was born Dec. 11, 1836, at Mercer county, Pa. He came west in 1842 and located in Pike county with his parents. Later he lived in Galesburg. In 1879 he went to Joliet and became owner of the Republican. In 1885 he was made postmaster, but of late years, was in the insurance business.

MAJ. ROBERT MANN WOODS, editor and publisher of the Republic and Sun, has for many years been a prominent figure among the various interests of Will County, and especially of the city of Joliet. He is a gentleman of fine abilities, possessing great energy and enterprise, and is in the habit of making a success of whatever he undertakes. He was born April 17, 1840, in Greenville, Mercer County, Pa., and is the son of William J. and Sarah (Mann) Woods. The parents were natives respectively of Western New York and Maryland. This branch of the Woods family is of Irish extraction, and as far back as the records go, were in religion Scotch-Irish Presbyterians. The father of our subject was a cabinet-maker by trade, and politically a life-long Abolitionist, being the only man in Pike County, this State, who voted for James G. Birney for President. For a number of years he published a Free Soil paper in Galesburg, Ill., having come to the State in 1842. In 1855, in company with others, he formed the Western Industrial and Scientific Institution, which established a still flourishing college at College Springs, Iowa. He is still living, a hale and hearty old man, making his home in Sheridan County, Kan., where three of his sons also reside. He was married the third time at the age of eighty-two years and is now eighty-five years old. He preserves much of his old time energy and activity, and at the present writing, April, 1890, is engaged in setting out an orchard and maintains that he expects to gather fruit from it for several seasons to come. To William J. Woods by his first wife, the mother of our subject, was born a family of ten children, of whom Robert M. was the fifth in order of birth. Marilla S., the first child, Mrs. Young, is living in Cameron, Mo.; the second child, Newton, is farming in Sheridan County, Kan.; Addison is a resident of Sheridan County, Kan.; Narcissa, Mrs. Cox, resides in Quincy, Ill.; John is engaged in the real-estate business at Joliet; Sarah J., Mrs. Maj. A. R. Anderson, died in Sidney, Iowa. Her husband was for several terms a member of Congress; Isaac, a gallant soldier of the Fourth Missouri Cavalry, died in Washington, Ind., in 1889; William P. is a grocer at Villisca, Iowa; and Williston B. is a farmer in Sheridan County, Kan. The subject of this notice was taken to Pike County, this State, in 1842, when a child, and lived there until 1848. Then going to Galesburg, he attended Knox College, and lived there for a period of ten years. In 1858 he crossed the Mississippi, and until 1861 taught school in Iowa and Missouri. At the outbreak of the Civil War he was appointed by Gov. Yates to a position in the Quartermaster's and Governor's offices, which occupied his time until June, 1864. He was then appointed Adjutant of Yates' Sharp-shooters, which formed the Sixty-fourth Illinois Regiment. He served in this through the Atlanta campaign and was then detailed as a mustering officer. Subsequently he served on the staff of Maj. Gen. Giles A. Smith, participating in the march to the sea and the campaign through the Carolinas, when he was commissioned Captain of Company A, Sixty-fourth Illinois Infantry, and was twice brevetted for gallant and meritorious service as Captain and Major. At the close of the war he went with his regiment to Washington, and was present at the Grand Review. He then proceeded with his regiment to Louisville, Ky., where he was mustered out, and as a mustering officer signed the discharge papers of over ten thousand soldiers. After leaving the army Maj. Woods was summoned to Springfield by Adj. Gen. I. N. Haynie, and there he wrote the histories of all the Illinois regiments for the Adjutant-General's report, these making nine volumes. In the spring of 1866, he wrote the constitution and by-laws, charter, etc.. for the Grand Army of the Republic, which was originated by Dr. B. F. Stephenson, and of which Maj. Woods was the first Adjutant-General. Soon afterward he organized the various departments throughout the Northwest. The original charter of Decatur Post, No. 1, has his name upon it. In 1868 Maj. Woods repaired to Chicago, Ill., where he was variously engaged, and for four and one-half years officiated as chief clerk during the construction of the United States Custom House and post-office, in that city. In 1877 he was appointed Insurance Examiner of Illinois, and during his incumbency of this office it became his duty to proceed against and close up, in the courts of the State, the Republic Life, the Protection Life, and Chicago Life Insurance Companies. This employed his time until 1879, and then turning his attention to the newspaper world, he purchased the Joliet Republican of James Goodspeed. He conducted this successfully until 1883, then purchased the Joliet Sun, which he merged with the Republican. In 1888, reaching out still farther, he purchased the Daily and Weekly Press, and consolidated the three papers under the name of Republic and Sun. He is an able journalist, making an interesting local paper, which has become one of the indispensable institutions of Will County. Its political complexion reflects his own convictions and sympathies, which have been in harmony with the principles of the Repulican party since he became a voter. He has an admirably equipped office, including a job department and book bindery, fitted out with all the machinery and other appliances necessary to do first-class work. The paper has a healthy subscription list, and the job department is generously patronized by the people of Joliet and Will County. Maj. Woods was married, October 5, 1867, in Chicago, Ill., to Miss May Florence Miner. Mrs. Woods was born April 8, 1851, at Harding, Ill., and is the daughter of Samuel E. and Asenath (Darrow) Miner, who were natives of Massachusetts, and are now residents of Phoenix, Arizona. Two children, a daughter and a son, have been born of this union, Alice M. and Miner R., who still remain with their parents. The family residence and its surroundings, forms one of the attractive homes of Joliet, and is located in the southeastern part of the city. Elsewhere in this volume the reader will notice a lithographic portrait of Maj. Woods.

William P. Woods was born in Galesburg, Illinois April 30, 1850. At an early age he moved with his parents to College Springs, Page county, Illinois, lived there several years, then moved to Taylor county, Iowa. He was married to Mary I. Swalley at Joliet, Illinois February 19, 1880. Six children were born to this union, one having died in infancy. After their marriage, they lived in Taylor county seven years, when in 1887 they moved to Sheridan county, Kansas where they have since lived. He was converted at the age of 36 years and joined the M.E. church of which he remained a faithful member and lived an exemplary Christian life. He died on the evening of the 12th of May, 1903, being 53 years and 12 days old. His body was laid to rest in the Studley cemetery May 14th. He leaves a wife and five children. Rev. Mickey conducted the services preached from 2 Tim. 4, 7-8.
