    LA BARR
Almira La Barr, whose maiden name was Palmer, was born in Saratoga county, N.Y., September 11, 1808, and died July 7, 1885, at 10:05 A.M. The subject of this memoir was the wife of John W. La Barr, one of the oldest and most respected citizens of Niagara county, to whom she was united in marriage in 1832, and with whom she loved pleasantly for nearly 54 years, when suddenly and without a moment's warning the drum of life beat a halt. She met with an accident by falling, on the 6th day of July, and suffered the most excruciating agony for nearly half an hour subsequent to her injury and then sunk into an unconscious state and continued in that condition until the following day, when her weary spirit took its flight to be with Him whom she adored. Sister LaBarr was a firm believer in the religion of out Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ, which she embraced in 1842 at which time she united with the Methodist Episcopal Church and continued a member of that denomination until 1854 when she and her husband united with the Wesleyan Methodist Church of Chestnut Ridge, Niagara county, N.Y., of which church she was a worthy member at the time of her decease. The funeral services were held at the residence of John W. LaBarr, and the writer improved the occasion from (Prov. xiv-32) "But the righteous hath hope in his death." She was the mother of ten children. She leaves a husband and six children - 4 daughters and 2 sons - and eight grandchildren to mourn their loss. The church has lost another, society a good and respected citizen and the home a faithful, devoted and loving mother and wife. Her mortal remains were interred in the Chestnut Ridge cemetery waiting the morning of the resurrection when those who sleep in Jesus will come forth to the resurrection of life - for which event the children of the deceased are kindly and earnestly admonished to prepare themselves.
    B.B. Laughlin, Paster.

Almira married John Wesley Labar on 14 Jul 1832. John (son of Joseph Labar and Esteher Marvin) was born on 5 Sep 1807 in Northampton, Montgomery, NY; died on 31 Dec 1905 in Royalton, Niagara, NY. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

    History of Northumberland
Joseph Palmer settled on the farm now owned by George Peck. He was a surveyor. Jared Palmer, for many years a town officer, was the son of Joseph.

"from Baker Family Remembrances" by Ethel Baker
CAPT. JOSEPH PALMER, father of Nicholas, was born at Stonington, Conn. in 1742. He was a Revolutionary War soldier, Captain 6th Co., 13th Reg't., Saratoga District. Joseph married Eunice, probably in Northumberland, Saratoga Co., N.Y. and they had six children - Jared, Anson, David, Joseph, Phoebe and NICHOLAS. He, Joseph, was a surveyor employed by the Hudson Bay Company. He received as a wedding gift from the Company any 100 acres of land he chose to survey out. Accordingly, he chose that much land and lived on it until his death in 1815. Many Indian relies have been found in these fields at different times and it is believed an Indian Village was located here. He died intestate and his wife Eunice - quote; "I, Eunice Palmer, widow of Joseph Palmer, late of Northumberland, who died intestate, renounce my right to administer on the goods etc., and pray that my sons Jared and Anson Palmer may be permitted to take letters of administration". - signed Eunice Palmer. Jared Palmer of Northumberland, duly sworn, says that his father Joseph Palmer, died intestate 1815. Jared, Anson, David and Joseph Palmer (sons) of Northumberland gave bonds of $2000.00 each for estate of Joseph Palmer. Jared and Anson took inventory July 3, 1815 in the year of our Lord and the 39th year of our independence.

from "The Saratoga Sentinel", 18 Mar 1834 (genealogybank.com)
DIED, On the 10th inst., in Northumberand, Mrs. Eunice, mother of Nicholas Palmer. aged 97.

Many accounts list her father as William Copeland. However, no evidence has been found yet to support this claim. Also, Eunice's oldest daughter, Bethiah, married a William Coplin or Copeland, which might explain the confusion.
