Grand Rapids, April 2. - Fred B. Perkins, aged 46, a man well and favorably known in this city, committed suicide this morning by hanging. He has been living alone with his mother, and arose early this morning apparently in the best of spirits. About 9 o'clock he asked her what kind of meat he should get for dinner. She told him to suit himself, and he started out. Two hours later the aged mother went to the cellar to get some vegetables for dinner and was horrified to see her son's body dangling from a rope from a beam under the floor. Close by lay his cuffs and a cigar he had lighted upon leaving the house, with even the ashes undisturbed. The coroner decided that an inquest was unnecessary, the evidence being too plain, and decided it a case of suicide. Perkins was formerly a successful merchant in Albany, and latterly in the grocery business here. He leaves about $20,000, well invested. He has a divorced wife living in Oregon, and while some of his friends are at a loss to account for a cause for the tragedy, others think domestic troubles induced despondency and temporary insanity.
