Mr. McMahon O'Brien served the Stars and Strips during the war and then came to California. He was connected with the Hibernia Savings Bank and the Dime Savings Bank on Market Street. The Dime Savings Bank was a smaller bank, un the direction of "W. McMahon O'Brien, Esq." This bank withstood some hard times, when other bank failed. In 1878 it was said that the late Mr. McMahon O'Brien was "and his surviving brothers are of the same family as the Marquis of Thomand, Lord Inchiquin" in Ireland. It was said that the title and lands rightfully belonged to this branch of the family, but all was lost in the 16th century confiscation's. Mr. O'Briens grandfather was John O'Brien who still retains some estates in County Clare, Ireland. Mr O'Briens father came to the U.S. while his children were still young, but he did not survive long.
