Joseph A. (Jeremiah S., Aaron, Aaron, Jeremiah, Jacob, John, John) was born in Salem, Mass., July 1, 1840. He married Anna Upton Waters, Sept. 7, 1870, at Paris, Illinois. She was the daughter of William and Lucy B. (Wright) Waters, and was born Sept. 23, 1850. He is a watchmaker by trade, and resides in Salem, Mass. He was a soldier in the war of the Rebellion, and was in the company of Zouaves raised by Capt. Arthur F. Devereux, a company noted for its perfect drill. They were among the first to respond to the call for volunteers.
