  from "The Rochester Democrat and Chronicle", May 25, 1894 (fultonhistory.com) ALLEGANY The news of the death of Gamaliel Benjamin, who was at one time a prominent resident of Belfast, has been recieved at that place. Mr. Benjamin was 88 years old at the time of his death, which occured at his home in Farmer village, Seneca county. He was elected sheriff of this county in 1854. from "NY Tribune", 16 July 1855 (fultonhistory.com) STARTLING INTELLIGENCE.?We haye no words with which to express our feelings in just hearing the startling news that Gamaliel Benjamin, Sheriff of this county, was on Saturday night last bitten with his own dog, since proved to be rabid. The dog suddenly sprang at Mr. Benjamin biting his hand severely. On Sunday tho dog left home and was yesterday morning killed in the village of Almond, after having bitten the colored barber of that place, beside numerous animals. The feelings of Mr. Benjamin and family, as well of his numerous friends, can better be imagined than described. Every effort will of course be used as far as medical aid can avail, to avoid the fatal result usually attending cases of this kind, and we can but hope that so useful a citizeu may still live to prove a bleesiog to his family and community. We learn that the barber, bitten in Almond, had a piece immediately cut out of his arm in the region of the wound. [Wellsville (N.Y.) July 11]
