HON. WALDO PETTENGILL, of Rumford Falls, the Vice-President and Manager of the Portland & Rumford Falls Railroad, has been largely instrumental in developing Rumford. He was born at Livermore Falls, Me., December 1, 1844, son of Oliver and Huldah (Baker) Pettengill, both natives of this state. Oliver Pettengill, who was born in the town of Fayette, Kennebec County, spent his early life there and in East Livermore, chiefly occupied in farming. In 1866 he purchased a large farm in Rumford, about six miles from the present village, and settled there permanently. In addition to being a farmer he was also a mill man, was very successful in a financial way, and at his death, which happened in his sixty-sixth year, he left a large estate. His wife, who was born in Livermore, died at the age of seventy-one. Both were members of the Methodist church.

Charles Baker, president and treasurer of the Charles Baker Company, lumber dealers and manufacturers of doors, sashes and builders' finish, died Friday morning about 7 o'clock, age 68 years, at his residence, corner of Salisbury Street and Park Avenue, of heart failure, after several weeks illness. His health began to fail six or seven weeks ago, but his condition was not deemed to be critical until about three weeks ago, when he made his last visit to his place of business on Foster Street. Mr. Baker was one of the best known and most enterprising businessman of Worcester, shown in the face of many obstacles and repeated disasters by fire, which would have discouraged most men. He was born in Phillipston, April 4, 1828, his father, James Baker, being a farmer in moderate circumstances. His ancestors on his mother's side were of Worcester parentage for several generations, his mother being a daughter of William Golding, who built the old house on Mechanic street which stood on the site purchased by the city on which to build the new fire department headquarters. His grandmother Lucretia (Bigelow) Golding, was daughter of David Bigelow, brother of Col. Timothy Bigelow of revolutionary fame. Starting as a poor farmer boy in his native town, working during the summer and attending district school in the winter, Mr. Baker in his youth had an ambition to obtain further education, and coming to Worcester he became a student at Worcester Academy, working his way to pay his expenses, at various kinds of labor outside of school hours. In this way he fitted himself for Amherst College. Owing to failing eyesight, however, he was obligated soon to abandon his college studies. After traveling for a while in the west as a book agent, he returned to Massachusetts in 1855, and decided to locate in Worcester. In company with his brother, William J. Baker, he started a small box factory at the south end, but soon afterwards they remove to a small shop which stood on the site of the company's present lumber yard on Foster street. This business rapidly increased, and there was soon added to box making the manufacturer of doors, sashes, and blinds, and all kinds of builders' finish, with the sale of finish lumber of all kinds, making this one of the largest establishments of the kind in this section of the state. The loss of $100,000 by the disastrous fire of September, 1891, did not at all crippled the energies of this enterprising company, notwithstanding it was soon followed by another great fire in the winter of 1892-3. Neither of these disasters nor others which the Bakers suffers, impaired their successful business efforts. Mr. Baker was a member of Montacute Lodge of Free Masons, and was identified with the Board of Trade and Builders' Exchange. He married, Sept. 1, 1863, Elutheria, daughter of Tilly S. And Susan (Harr) Manley of Hardwick, and she survives him, with a son, Chas. Baker, Jr., and three daughters. Another son, William J., lost his life by drowning in North Pond, last winter.

The remains of John E. Baker, the Milwaukee conductor, arrived from Freeport at 11:30 today over the C. M. & St. P. road. They were accompanied by the wife and son, Rufus and wife, and a committee from the Order of Railway Conductors 106 of Rock Island. Services were conducted at the home in Freeport this morning at 7 o'clock by Rev. Axtell, of the Methodist church. The funeral occurred from the depot on Twentieth street to Chippiannock cemetery, where the remains were laid to rest. Many floral tributes covered the bier. Among them was one from the Milwaukee employees at Freeport, the design standing four feet high. A bunch of flowers was handed to the mourners by a little miss at Port Byron junction, who was accustomed to ride to Rock Island with the deceased. The pallbearers, all of the order of Railway Conductors, were: M. F. Archer, J. D. Dizotell, A. T. Rohwedder, J. A. Stafford, O. J. Brien and L. A. Mapes.

Death of Rev. Edward Payson Baker
Rev. Edward Payson Baker, a graduate of Bangor Theological Seminary in 1857, died at Ben Lomond, Santa Cruz County, Cal., Jun 20th, 1896, aged 66 years. His death was caused by his bicycle running off a narrow bridge, precipitating him upon the rocks below. He was born November 3, 1830 in Phillipston, Mass., the son of Levi and Mary (Converse) Baker, and was graduated from Amherst College in 1853. He preached in Dennsyville from 1857-1860, where he was ordained in 1858. He was at Jackson Brook and Freedom from 1861-1862; at East Machias, 1863-1866; Winterport, 1866-1872; San Francisco, California, 1872-1880; Foreign church, Hilo, Hawaii, Sandwich Islands from 1880. After a few year he returned to California. He married L Maria Upton in August, 1866.

WORCESTER, June 10 - Funeral services for Charles Baker, 69, of 42 Westwood drive, president and treasurer of the Baker Lumber Company, and president of the Baker Box Company, who died today at his home will be at 2 P.M. Friday in the Parish House of First Unitarian Church. Burial will be in the Rural Cemetery. A graduate of Worcester Tech, Mr. Baker had been an officer of the College Corporation and the Alumni Association for over 46 years. He was a trustee of Worcester County Institution for Savings, a past president of Northeastern Lumber Dealers' Association, member of First Unitarian Church, Worcester Club, Tatnuck County Club, Players Club of Worcester, Worcester Art Museum, Worcester Association of Mutual Aid in Detecting Thieves, Chamber of Commerce, Civic Music Association and Worcester County Fish and Game Association. He was valedictorian when he was graduated from Worcester Polytechnic Institute in 1893, entering then the business established here by his father in 1855. He was elected a member of the W.P.I. Association in 1894, was its vice president from 1897 to 1899, its secretary from 1899 to 1909 and president from 1909 to 1912. He had been secretary of the college Corporation since 1911. He had been a life trustee since 1919 and received an honorary doctorate of engineering degree from Tech two years ago. He leaves his widow, Mrs. Ruth (Curtis) Baker; three daughters, Mrs. Prentice Strong of New York, Mrs. William T Carleton of Worcester and Miss Faith A. Baker of this city; and a sister, Mrs. Paul Potter of Boston.

The principal topic of conversation on the streets, Sunday, was the sad drowning accident at North pond, Saturday evening, in which William J. Baker, a son of Charles Baker, president of the Charles Baker Lumber Company, lost his life. The body of the unfortunate young man, which was taken from the water shortly after midnight, Sunday morning, and removed to his parents' home at the corner of Salisbury street and Park avenue, was viewed Sunday by Medical Examiner F.H. Baker, who decided that the cause of the death was accidental drowning. The funeral will take place from the family residence at 2 o'clock, Tuesday afternoon. A meeting of the Lincoln Guild of Central Church was held in the library at the close of the morning service, to take action on the death of Mr. Baker, who was a member of the society, a committee consisting of Rev. E.M. Chapman, David M. Earle, Jr., Roswell T. Hapgood and Earnest Smith, was appointed to purchase a floral tribute in represent the guild at the funeral. A meeting of the freshman class at Worcester Polytechnic Institute will be held this noon, when a delegation will be selected to attend the funeral. Miss Estelle Potter, who, as stated in the Sunday Spy, was in the icy water fully five minutes before she was rescued, spend Saturday night at ex-Alderman W.C. Jewett's home, where she was taken after being rescued from the water. She was removed to her home on Salisbury Street, Sunday morning. She is now confined to her bed as a result of the shock, but is resting as comfortably as can be expected. So far as her physical condition is concerned, she has entirely recovered. It is not until Sunday morning that she was told of the sad fate that had befallen her companion. It was not carelessness nor foolhardiness on the part of the young couple that caused the accident. The hole in the ice into which they skated had formed during the last two days, for Thursday night when a number of the young people of Salisbury street went out there, the pond was entirely frozen over and perfectly safe. It was not known by those most familiar with the pain that there was any current or spring in that part that should have kept the water open. In the darkness of the night the water looked almost the same as the ice about it, and even the young man who rescued Miss Potter nearly skated into the water in encircling the hole to reach her. It is surprising that an accident had not occurred earlier in the evening for there were several people who, unaware of any treacherous place, it's skated across the pond in almost the very spot of the sad accident.

Rice Creek Resident Passes Away
George H. Baker, well known resident of Rice Creek, passed away at Barstow, California, on October 28th following a stroke of paralysis. Mr. Baker had not been ill long, and his death comes as a shock to many friends. Mr. Baker was a Civil War veteran and had made his home on the Pacific coast since 1893. The deceased leaves to survive him a wife and stepson, E.F. Lang, also a resident of Rice Creek. The funeral services will be held tomorrow at 2 o'clock from the Undertaking parlors, with Rev. Caldwell, of the Baptist church officiating. Interment will follow in the Odd Fellows cemetery. The many friends of the family wish to extend their heart felt sympathy during this hour of sadness.

Orange, July 11 - John F. Baker, 86, died Thursday morning at this home on the Warwick road after a short illness. He was a native of Livermore Falls, Me., the son of James and Elizabeth Glass Baker, and came to Warwick 45 years ago. He formerly ran a lumber business and in recent years had operated a successful farm. Mr. Baker was a prudent and hard working man and his large and well arranged wood pile was the envy of all who passed. He leaves his widow, Mrs. Cora B. Baker; five daughters, Mrs. S.W. Blake of Warwick, Misses Blanche and Mildred Baker of Pittsburg, Pa., Mrs Charles MacKay of San Francisco, Cal., and Mrs. N.H. Perley of Fitchburg, and a son, Harry R. Baker of Athol. Dr. William T. Baker, 71, physician of Oak Cliff for many years, died Tuesday morning at his residence, 1329 Canterbury Court. He had practiced medicine in Dallas since 1906, formerly living at Midlothian. He had been an active member of the Dallas County Medical Society many years, filling the office of president in 1920, as well as serving on the staff of Parkland Hospital. Dr. Baker was born Jan. 9, 1864 in Lancaster, the son of William Thatcher Baker and Emily Beeman Baker. Both families came to Texas before the Civil War. His direct ancestor moved from Ohio down the Mississippi River then by tedious stages overland to Dallas County about 1835. Moving to Hamilton in his school days he grew to manhood there and later engaged in the mercantile business in Brownwood. He was a member of Oak Cliff Christian Church. He married Nannie Key, daughter of J. P. Key of Jonesboro, on Jun 13, 1886. He is survived by his wife; a son, Otwell S. Baker, both of Dallas; a daughter, Mrs. Coleta B. Williams; a granddaughter, Turner F. Williams, both of Tulsa; three brothers Dr. C. C. Baker, Hamilton; Norton A, Baker, San Antonio, and John B. Baker, Dallas, and five sisters, Mrs. Angie Nicholson, Hamilton; Mrs. Hettie Shannon, Fort Worth, Mrs. Jane Edgar, Hamilton; Mrs. Margaret L. Mathis, Lometa, and Mrs. M. A. Boone, Dallas. MIDLOTHIAN, Texas, Nov. 28. - Funeral services for Mrs. B.B. Holland, 65, resident of Midlothian for the last thirty-eight years. who died at her home here Monday morning, will be held Tuesday afternoon, the Rev. Mr. Lord of Fort Worth officiating. Burial will follow in the Midlothian Cemetery. Mrs. Holland was born at Bear Creek, near Lancaster, but moved at an early age to Hamilton, where she resided until 1894, when she moved to Midlothian. Dr. C. C. Baker, Sr. was born in Dallas County, 2 ½ miles southwest of Lancaster. The family moved to the head waters of Plum Creek 10 miles south of Hamilton, March 10, 1879, when he was a child. His father, W. T. Baker [William Thatcher Baker] died when Charles was 13 years old, leaving his mother and 5 younger brothers and sisters for him to take care of. The following 5 years were spent in hard work with no time for school. When Russel and Cleveland took charge of the Hamilton Public school, Charlie left the farm in charge of his younger brothers and went to Hamilton to school. He did chores for his board and chopped cord wood on Saturdays and after school hour at 75¢ per cord to pay the remainder of his school expenses. He taught school 2 years, after which he took a job of clerking for Pinkerton and Scruggs, general merchants, working about __ years at this. He then went to Baltimore College of Dental Surgery, going by Chicago to the World?s?s Fair, this being the fall of 1893. He returned home in March, 1894, obtained a certificate for the practice of dentistry, opened an office in Hamilton where he has had an office and practiced ever since, except while absent attending dental colleges. Dr. Baker, Sr., has a diploma from the State Dental College, now known as Baylor, a post-graduate certificate from Chicago College of Dental Surgery, and has kept up with the progress of his profession. He married Alma Nicholson who was born south of Hamilton on Cowhouse Creek, and the two have labored together to help build up the town and this section of Texas. Dr. Baker has served on the school board and the city council. He has always taken a very active part in politics. For a number of years he has been a leading Republican in Texas, serving as a member of the State Executive Committee, also he has attended practically all state conventions, and several national ones, having been a delegate from Texas in 1912 and bolted with Roosevelt (Teddy, not Franklin.) Dr. Baker is active, alert, and physically fit, right up to the minute in things pertaining to the practice of dentistry; has a large practice. He owns his own home, office building in Hamilton, and over Ten Thousand Dollars in modern dental equipment.

John B. Baker Of Old Family In Dallas Dies
John Beeman Baker, 75, member of a pioneer family here and operator of Baker's Pharmacy on Second Avenue, died at his home, 910 Wayne, Tuesday after a short illness. A native of Dallas, he had lived here until about forty years ago when he moved to Haskell, Haskell County, where he served as postmaster while practicing pharmacy. About five years later he returned to Dallas where he had lived ever since. His grandfather, J.J. Beeman, was reputed to be the first man to drive his wagon through the area that later become Dallas- the wagon tracks later became street routes here. Baker had attended Texas Christian University. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday in the Geo. A. Brewer Funeral Chapel, 3603 Ross, with the Rev. W.A. Welsh, pastor of East Dallas Christian Church, and the Rev. Luke Bolin, associate minister, officiating. Burial will be in Restland Memorial Park. Surviving are his wife; two daughters, Mrs. Minnier DeSpain and Mrs. B.W. Bradshaw, both of Dallas; three grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Hibbard Baker was a promising young lawyer in this city when he was nominated for congress by the Republicans and defeated by the late H. Logan Chipman. The bill for divorce was filed and suppressed on October 23 last, and it alleged non-support and desertion. With a few day of that date the appearance of the defendant was entered by Bethune Duffield, and two weeks later the answer, which was also suppressed, like all the records in the case. At the hearing Mrs. Baker and her father, L.S. Butterfield, testified that for a number of years after the marriage, which place about ten or twelve years ago, Mr. and Mrs. Baker led a happy life together, but that Mr. Baker's attitude toward his wife changed when he went south to look up lands for speculators, in the summer of 1893. The complainant stated that after her husband had been absent a short time she visited him in the south at his request. After awhile he asked her to return home, agreeing to send for her if he made up his mind to stay in the south, or else he would come back to Detroit. Mrs. Baker declared he did neither, but that instead he went to New York city, where he is now engaged in the real estate business. The desertion took place in August, 1893. At that time the Bakers had one child, Harold, who will be 7 years old on the 4th next month. Another child, Grace, was born on October 2, 1893. Mrs. Baker introduced proof that her husband had not supported her or their children for more than two years. Judge Donovan called the attention of the lawyers to the fact that the statutory four months from the beginning of the suit had not elapsed and that he could not grant a decree on that ground. However, as desertion for more than tow years had also been shown by undisputed evidence, a decree was given on the that ground, the law allowing a divorce for that cause in less than four months from the filing of the bill.

An inquest has been ordered into the death of Miss Mayry Baker, who died Friday evening as a result of injuries received when the automobile in which she was riding collided with another machine at Lagrave-av. and Island-st.. Announcement of the inquest was made Saturday by Coroner Simeon Le Roy. The jury was to be impaneled during the day and the inquest probably will be held next Tuesday or Wednesday to determine whether there was criminal negligence. The tragedy occurred when a touring car driven by Norman E, Wilding of the Welding Film Manufacturing Co., in which Miss Baker and four other women were riding, collided with a bus driven by Clarence E Pratt, 122 Davidson-av., S., a garage man, who was making trips to and from the Sells-Floto circus grounds. Pratt had left the Golden Motor Sales Co. garage, 49- 59 Lagrave-av less than a 100 feet south of the crossing, a moment before the crash which caused the Wilding machine to capsize. Pratt was driving north on the extreme right of Lagrave-av when he collided with Wilding’s machine which was approaching from the east on Island-st. The bus struck the touring car near the driver's seat and the running board of the latter car scraped over the top of the projecting springs on the front of Pratt’s machine. Wilding’s automobile listed sharply, throwing Miss Baker to the pavement. She was caught beneath the car when it turned over, her chest being crushed. Three women who were riding in the tonnean of the machine and another, who was riding with the driver and Miss Baker in the front seat, escaped injury. They are Mrs. Carrie Wilding, 243 MOrris-av., mother of Mr. Wilding. Mrs. Graen C. Whittlesey, 126 Madision-av.; Miss Lous L. Bimes, 317 Washington-st.., and Mris Louis Conrad of Chicago.

Fireman from engine house No. 1 righted the machine and aided in removing Miss Baker. She was carried to the engine house and the police ambulance took her to St Mary's hospital, where she died soon after 8 o’clock. Pratt said he was running in second speed when he neared the corner. He attempted to place the car into high when his mechanism did not work properly. ”I looked ahead, and all was clear,” he said, ”I glanced down as the gear-shift stuck and in a dash the Wilding car appeared ahead. I don’t see how the impact of the collision could have turned over the car.” According to spectators neither of the cars was moving at a very fast rate of speed. Pratt denied white lettering on the windshield of his machine obscured his vision. ”The Pratt car, instead of slowing down, showed a burst of speed,” said Mr. Wilding, ”I saw the car coming but as I had the right-of-way and was in no apparent danger, I stepped on the accelerator a little just as anyone else would do. Had he been noticing where he was driving he easily could have avoided hitting my machine, for I had nearly passed the corner.”

Miss Baker for the past several years has been employed as buyer for the china department of Foster Stevens & Co. She was born at Wyandotte 41 years ago,. Her parents, Mr. and Mrs. George P Baker, are dead and the only relatives, Mrs. Loyal E. Knappen of this city, a cousin, and two brothers George Baker of New York and Lewis Baker of Kansas City were notified. The body was removed to the Berton Spring chapel pending word from the brothers. Miss Baker was making her home at the residence of Carl S. Judson, 248 Morris-av. She was among the first of Grand Rapids women to enroll in the Y.M.C.A. overseas organization and sailed for France in August, 1918, returning to this country 18 months later.

The funeral of Charles H. Baker, the veteran fireman who died Wednesday, was held at his home, 40 Pynchon street, at 3.30 o'clock yesterday afternoon, Rev Dr Frank L. Goodspeed officiating. OZONA - Services for Hubert Weldon Baker, 75, of Ozona, are set for 3:300 p.m. today in the Ozona Church of Christ, with burial in Cedar Hill Cemetery under direction of Janes Funeral Home. Baker died at 12:30 p.m. Thursday in Shannon Hospital. He was born Aug. 13, 1902, in Tennyson and had lived in Ozona since 1927. He operated a grocery store in Ozona for 16 years, and was a salesman for 23 years for Martin-Glover Wholesale. He was manager of the Ozona Chamber of Commerce for eight years and retired in March 1974. Baker was also past worshipful master of the Ozona Masonic Lodge, and received his 50-year pin in 1974. He was a member of the Texas Old-Time Fiddlers Association and was an elder of the Ozona Church of Christ for 30 years. Survivors include his wife, Lottie Lee, of the home; one daughter, Mrs. A.J. Pakkila of Fredericksburg; one sister Mrs. J.E. Butler of San Angelo; and two brothers, Clifford Baker and Neal Baker, both of San Angelo; three grandchildren, three great grandchildren and a number of nieces and nephews.

PECOS (Staff) - Services for James Artemus Baker, 79, of Pecos, will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday in Lockney with burial in Lockney Cemetery under the direction of Pecos Funeral Home. Baker died at 5 a.m. Sunday in Reeves County Memorial Hospital in Pecos following a long illness, Born Sept. 22, 1896, in Lockney, he had been a resident of Pecos since 1947. He was in the irrigation business. Lockney Rites Set for Lubbock Man
Funeral rites for J.L. (Larry) Baker, longtime Lubbock resident, well be held at 3:30 p.m. today in Carter Funeral Home, Lockney. The South Plains cotton farmer died in West Texas Hospital at 6:20 p.m. Tuesday. Baker, who was the uncle of Lubbock City Commissioner Lennis Baker, was a native of Lockney but had been a Lubbock resident for the past 26 years. Helen Baker Gross passed away peacefully with her niece by her side at Kindred Hospice in San Antonio on Friday, April 21, 2017 at the age of 103. She was the youngest of 13 children born to James Artemas and Sarah Alice Baker in Lockney, Texas on February 15, 1914. She was a life-long member of the Church of Christ. After high school Helen attended Lippert Business School in Plainview where she met L.E. (Edward) Gross. They were married December 26, 1936 and were blessed with one daughter, Elizabeth Alice (Beth) who passed away after a long illness at the age of 33. In 1950 the family moved to Port Lavaca where Edward worked in the smelting section at the newly-built ALCOA plant in Point Comfort. Then in the late 1950s Ed and Helen began their business, Port Lavaca Real Estate and Maintenance. Helen continued running the rental portion of the business from her husband's death in 1980 until her health prevented her from doing so in 2016. Helen was preceded in death by her parents; 12 brothers and sisters; her daughter; her husband; and her grandson, David Edward Stokes. She is survived by numerous nieces and nephews as well as numerous great nieces and nephews, and great-great-nieces and nephews living throughout the United States. Visitation will be held at the Richardson-Colonial Funeral Home in Port Lavaca on Tuesday, April 25 from 6-8 p.m. Services will be held at the Port Lavaca Church of Christ on Wednesday, April 26 at 10 a.m. with Shan Jackson, minister, conducting the service. Burial at Greenlawn Gardens will immediately follow the service.
