The Reverend Guy Beckley (1805-1847), a devout abolitionist, came to Ann Arbor in 1839 with his wife Phyla and their eight children. In 1840 he purchased 28 acres of land adjoining the farm owned by his brother Josiah, to whom he sold all but the plot on which the Guy Beckley House at 1425 Pontiac Trail still stands. Beckley was well established in Ann Arbor as a minister and lecturer and active in the antislavery movement. He published an influential abolitionist paper, "The Signal of Liberty", edited by Theodore Foster. Beckley's house was an important "underground" station on one of the routes from the south. Beckley was member of the Michigan State Anti-Slavery Society, served on the Executive Committee from 1840 and functioned as Vice-President in 1845. The Reverend Beckley died in 1847, followed by his wife in 1850.

Fatal accident in Brookline - An accident occurred Thursday night in Brookline, by which a young lady named Susan Huntington Baker, was almost instantly killed. Mr. William E. Baker, of the firm of Grover & Baker, with his mother, his sister and a another young lady, we're driving out at about eight o'clock, when the horse became frightened and ran; several carriages were met and safely past, but when near the residence of Dr. Hedge, the vehicle came in collision with another, and the sister of Mr. Baker was thrown with violence to the ground. She was at once carried into the house of Dr, Hedge, but died almost immediately. The deceased was the youngest and last daughter of Abel and Sarah Reed Baker. Her funeral will take place at Brookline, on Monday, at four P.M.

William Emerson Baker, of Boston, Massachusetts, a Life Member, elected in 1857, was born in Boston, April 16, 1828, and died there, January 5, 1888. He was the son of Abel and Sarah (Reed) Baker, and a descendant of William Baker, of Concord, Massachusetts, through William, Captain Joseph, Timothy, and Abel, his father. He was in business as one of the celebrated firM of Grover and Baker Sewing Machine Company, and on his retirement devoted his time largely to the furtherance of educational matters. He was one of the first to propose and befriend the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He married, September 20, 1860, Charlotte Augusta, daughter of Walter Farnsworth, of Boston. They had two sons, Walter Farnsworth Baker, and Edward Farnsworth Baker. He began his life in a dry goods store, and subsequently joined W.O. Grover in business. He spent several years abroad contesting patient suits, and returning to the United States, bought Ridge Hill Farm at Wellesley, Massachusetts, and spent the reminder of his life by gratifying his taste in its embellishment in a rather eccentric and curious manner.

William married Charlotte Augusta Farnsworth on 20 Sep 1860. WALES BAKER, a member of the Board of Selectmen of Randolph and formerly Postmaster, was born in this town, November 18, 1843, son of Minot and Fanny (White) Baker. His father was a native of New Hampshire; and his mother, who was born in what is now Brookville, Mass., was a descendant of Peregrine White, the first white child born in New England after the landing of the "Mayflower" Pilgrims. Minot Baker followed the shoemaker's trade in Randolph, and was a well-known and respected citizen. His death occurred in 1862. The subject of this sketch was educated in the common and high schools of Randolph, and at the age of twenty years began to learn the tinsmith's trade, serving an apprenticeship of four years. After working as a journeyman in Toledo, Ohio, for a year, he returned to Randolph, where he engaged in business for himself, first alone and later becoming associated with G. F. Thayer. The firm of Baker & Thayer continued in business until 1873, when they sold out to Charles A. Wales, Mr. Baker remaining with the new proprietor until 1888. For a short time he was employed at his trade in North Easton, Mass. In June, 1890, he was appointed Postmaster at Randolph by President Harrison, and held office until May 15, 1895, since which time he has carried on the tinware business here. Mr. Baker married Emma A. Fritts, of Randolph, and has a family of seven children; namely, Alice W., M. Everett, Florence L., Cora A., Arthur C, Norman F., and Ernest R. Politically, Mr. Baker is a Republican, and has served as a Selectman since March, 1897. He is a Dictator of the Knights of Honor, and permanent secretary of Rising Star Lodge, I.O.O.F. ; chaplain of Pilgrim Lodge, No. 14, New England Order of Protection; a member of Maple Lodge, No. 313, Knights and Ladies of Honor, of Ouincy, Mass. ; and Orator of Randolph Lodge, No. 7, American Benefit Society. He is an earnest advocate of the temperance cause. As an active member of the Congregational church he takes a deep interest in religious work, serving as assessor and collector of the parish, treasurer of the church, and superintendent of the Sabbath-school.

Committal services at the grave in the High street cemetery were held Saturday for Bryce O. Baker, well known businessman and realtor of Hampton Beach, who died at St. Petersburg, Fla., last November. His remains had been placed in a vault at St. Petersburg after his death there. Rev. Herbert Walker, pastor emeritus of the Hampton Congregational Church, officiated. Bearers were Howard G. Lane, Roy Woods, all of Hampton, and Edmund Langley, Kenneth N. Ross, Wilbert J. Miller and Raymond Goding, all of Hampton Beach. Mrs. Nellie M. Baker, who was with her husband at St. Petersburg has returned and will carry on his real estate business. Mr. Baker was 74 years of age at the time of his death. William Brown of Hampton was in charge of arrangements.

(This is the house Ernie was born in. Originally the house was on Allen St. and was later moved to its present address.) Ernie has been active in The First Congregational Church of Randolph, since 1906. He has spent 76 years with the church choir. Ernie started out at the church pumping the old pipe organ. Grenville served as a Technical Sergeant & Radio Operator on SB-24D #42-40633, 868th Bomber Squadron, Heavy, U.S. Army Air Force during World War II. He resided in Norfolk County, Massachusetts prior to the war. He enlisted in the Army on August 29, 1942 in Boston, Massachusetts. He was noted, at the time of his enlistment, as being employed as a Retail manager and also as Single, without dependents. SB-24D #42-40633 was sent out on a bombing mission and never returned to base for an unknown reason. Grenville was declared "Missing In Action" on this flight during the war. He was awarded the Air Medal and the Purple Heart. Service # 31164993. Having actually gone "Missing" on the above date [10 Mar 1944], he was not officially declared by the military as being dead until January 24, 1946.

A memorial service for Ruth I. Baker of Northeast Portland will begin at 11 a.m. Wednesday in Central Bible Church. Burial will be in Brainard Cemetery. She died Friday in a Portland care center of causes related to age. Miss Baker was 88. She was born May 23, 1902, in West Bridgewater, Mass., and had lived in Portland since 1912. Miss Baker worked as an accountant for the U.S. Forest Service for a number of years and retired in 1962. She was a member of Central Bible Church. There are no survivors. It is suggested remembrances be contributions to Multnomah School of the Bible or Central Bible Church.
